New alloys versus refurb

Hi.

I have recently purchase my Z4 and absolutely thrilled with it, I just need to sort the wheels out and can not make up my mind to refurb them or just buy new alloys.

I have on the Z4 the 108 with runflats - front 225/40/R18 - rear 255/35R18. Have read on here that it is better to get non run flats for a smoother ride but would this not interfere with the handling of the car?

My choices are:

1: To refurb at a total cost of £500 (due to being split rims) plus I will have to buy one RFT (another £250 as Bridgestones) or,

2: to buy complete new set of alloys - I can get some Wolfrace Assassin (not everyone taste but I like to be different-probably going to get a let of dislikes to this but I am open to other ideas) with Hankook K110 for about £1000.

Your views and comments would be greatly appreciated and if you have pictures of any aftermarket alloys on you BMW could you please post to this thread.

Thanks..... :D

Why not refurb the 108's and fit non runflats ? many on here go that way for better handling !
Also i think there's a guy on the forum that does refurbs(leon in uk ),try a search :)

By far the best solution - check out posts by "Adamski", he's recently had 108's refurbed by Leon with a custom finish, and also has a black Z4. Combined with a set of 4 normal tyres you'd still be under £1k.

It is personal taste as far as the alloys go, but I would defiantly change to non run flats, I put Michelin Pilot Sport 3s on mine a couple of weeks ago and it totally changed the car's handling for the better, chalk and cheese comes to mind.

Totally agree on the non run flats. Transforms the car.

For the wheels, as mentioned above there's a guy on the forum that refurbs 108s. I had mine done, and im really happy with the finish. PM if you need anymore details or pics...

There are a few pics in the Gallery section in a thread by 'SocketR'@National Meet which show the finish I got (good quality pic). Here's a quick phone upload of one of the pics:

Personally I'd stick with the 108's unless you have a real dislike for them. They may corrode but are one of the 2 'right' rims for the Z4

I reckon £400 to refurb them.

cost me about 40 quid for the materials but then i did them myself just love those split rims

They are pukka

Leon does a great job as the pics of Adamski's wheel shows, and they don't have to be bi-colour... alternatively Lepsons have a good rep if they have a place near you.

I too thought long and hard about this decision. For me I just love the csl replicas but just couldn't bring myself to have non oem wheels.

I'm next on the Leon 108 refurb list but I'm sure you can add yourself after me. Try and get a used Bridgestone off here or eBay for the short term expect to pay £100 for one with decent tread.

£500 seems high for a refurb. £400 would be closer to what I'd expect to pay for a full back to metal refurb of split rims. Whereabouts are you based?

I am in Sudbury - Suffolk. I went to a guy in colchester and he quoted me £500 - he explained the reason it was expensive was because he takes the rims apart. My biggest problem is needing my car whilst the work is being done and the guy in colchester put a set of alloys on my car whilst he does the refurb over a four day period.

I've been quoted anything from £400 - £580! The £580 was by Sytner to which I asked if he was getting them re-plated with gold ;)

Have a look on the Leon wheel thread. He will post you the new wheels you go get them fitted and post yours back to him.

Not in any way a criticism but Leon is not a wheel refurber. He just buys them on Ebay and takes them to a local company to get refurbed, adds a margin and moves them on. I've even helped strip some down for him when bolts wouldn't come out easily.

I'm sure since you have rims already you can simply get them dome locally.

I know he doesn't do the refurbs himself but for me he's taking the pain out of the process. I need my car for work so can't really leave my car with someone without getting a courtesy car which adds expense.

If all 4 wheels were the same size I probably would've looked at buying one off eBay and getting one at a time refurbed myself.

This is the other place I was looking at

I don't know why I like the wheel swap idea.

I love the look of the 108's so I would go with the refurb. The Colchester place will provide a set of temporary wheels I understand which is a bonus! Also find someone who will properly split the wheels to do the job.
