Neuralgia

Does anyone suffer from Neuralgia in the face and have any tips to relieve the pain?

I had a bout of it in the right side of the face about 4 months ago for a couple of days, mainly in the night where it felt like I had an electric cable attached to the teeth, the pain was intolerable. I went to my dentist who said all fine although I do have a dodgy root filled tooth on that side of the face but the dentist said it shouldn't cause any pain if root treated :| I controlled the pain with Cordosol and anti bacterial mouth washes which when used the pain would disappear almost immediately. It went away after about 3 days and hasn't returned until now again. Had a bout of it again last night and this morning in waves of excruciating facial pain that comes and goes. Again if I use a mouthwash or even just water swilled in the mouth the pain subsides for a little while. When an attack happens the pain is pretty debilitating. I'm wandering if its the tooth and whether to have it out or some underlying problem which needs a doc to look at.

Cheers,

Tim.

I get trigeminal neuralgia now and again ever since having a wisdom tooth extracted some 30 years ago. The electric shock pain is familiar to me. An attack can last for several months.

I've seen all sorts of specialists who couldn't help, even had a head MRI scan. Pain killers are useless.

It sounds weird, but I've found that avoiding 'crunchy' food like nuts and similar keeps it at bay, I think that it may get triggered by shock waves in the skull due to crunching on such snacks, sounds strange but works for me!

Thanks John had no sleep at all last night so will try and get into the dentist this morning, I do have an exposed tooth which is root treated and suspecting that as the gum below the tooth is very tender. I got annoyed with the dentist last time as the tooth is broken and exposed but won't touch it as she says it's root treated. Might insist it's taken out.

my mother in law suffers from this, usually brought on in cold weather, chewing also aggravates it, its the swelling of blood vessels pressing on nerves. you have to keep you face covered and warm. not sure what medication she is on now, but has tried many, non seem to be very effective. I have seen how debilitating these attacks can be. I feel for you. any more tips on what works for people would be appreciated and tried.

A drug called Tegretol is commonly prescribed. I tried it, it's awful, it has to be taken every day and makes me feel lethargic and tired all the time. Doesn't do much for the pain either.

A couple of years ago I realised that the onset of an attack, which could last weeks, was triggered by eating nuts. It's not an allergy thing, I believe it's the mechanical crunching that is responsible. So now I just don't eat nuts or similar and it seems to keep the attacks away :)

Bit of an update, been taking the antbiotics but the dentist said the earliest they could fit me it was the 17th March to have the tooth taken out, wasn't entirely happy as this seemed a long time considering the pain I'd been in but said ok thinking with taking the antibiotics it should ease any infection and subsequent pain. Anyways Tuesday night 2-3am it got to the point where I was climbing the walls with pain and nearly dialled 111 and considered calling for an ambulance, it was only the thought that calling for ambulance for toothache seemed extreme but I've never experienced toothache pain like this, I tried allsorts, painkillers etc to try and ease it, only way I found which helped was using cold water which eased the pain. I called the dentist who said I needed to finish to antibiotics before any extraction but again Wednesday and to a lesser extent today as been using Codeine the pain has been bad. Called the dentist again today and thankfully they can fit me in tomorrow so hopefully I can get the blighter taken out. Bloody hate teeth, the worst toothache pain I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Cheers, I think the antibiotics are starting to work as this evening alot less pain, hopefully if the tooth can be removed tomorrow that should be the end of it. I've had alot of teeth probs over the years as I have over large root canals which are more susceptable to infection but this one has taken first prize in the pain stakes :x

Teeth are painfull when growing thro for the first time and painfull when they are getting old!
The only difference is the financial cost. :D

So true Ronk, cost me 51 quid although would happily have paid double to get pain free, hopefully it was the right tooth pulled

It's just cost me £79 for a molar filling replacement !
Best part of an hours work - but it's less than the Bmw dealer charges / hour.
