Netherlands or Holland?

Recently on the forum there was a discussion about Holland/Netherlands/Dutch

The image of someone with a bloody great tank as an avatar saying 'admit defeat' in this thread conjures up some weird WWII invasion of Holland images :o

Never thought of it that way. We were the good guys with little tanks with little guns in those days!

In Poland probably someone had it all wrong in the past, because in polish language the netherlands is called holandia, whereas niderlandy is a historical name for benelux geographical area..

I just came back from The Netherlands and I passed through Holland whilst I was there.

All swimmingly well until you get to France where they can't organise a train to go through a tunnel without breaking down ... (for 5 hours).

And I am not a mixed up dude, I am just "special" :D

Next time I go on holiday and somebody asks where I'm from, I'll say United Kingdom....we could argue about there being 4 countries and all with the same passports........
 
I'm in Arnhem on Saturday I'm going to ask a fella from the country.
If he says Netherlands, i will tell him you say he's wrong! :D
 
Haha ok...but I'll be supporting Holland at Euro 2016.

Ask any footballer if we've ever called the Orange Boys anything else apart from Holland in the football....
