Neil's Coupe

There are already many well documented updates, however I shall also be adding my own to the list given the variation in equipment used.

Now for a little update...haven't bothered to get pictures from the camera yet, but the tweeters are all happy in the mirror sail panels.

What have we here? by NeilllP, on Flickr

the fit wasn't easy. where was a lot of cutting out to be done (I've a spare set of these headed my way for when the car is ready to be put back to factory spec), but I'm happy with how it's turned out so far.

After all, what would the fun be with an ICE install if everything went in problem free?

Next step will be to wire up the passenger side as I'm running fresh wire from each component (better quality wire, lower resistance etc).

The genuine apple 30pin iPhone to Lightening adapter cable has a built in Digital to Analog converter in it. I've used that along with an aux input to the headunit and the quality seems pretty good...

not going cut the mustard for me. An outboard dac's ability is far superior to that of ones by apple. Sure it's enough for headphones (even then, I have a headphone amp hooked inline), but once you try and time delay, eq, and so on, the minor flaws are amplified. Not what I want at all.

Pics as promised of current progress..

and all closed up (obviously the gaps seen are not visible once installed back. ( I also sealed the tweeter in with flashing tape to reduce any air flow around the driver)

With the weekend comes more updates.

Deadener ordered (having used Dynamat and sworn by the stuff, Silent coat boasts far better value for money)

Then set about applying the stuff.

2 Layers of Silent Coat. by NeilllP, on Flickr

Two layers in most places. Went on like a treat and did a knock test (as passenger side is completely untouched) and the difference was enough to put a huge smile on my face.

Even the sound of closing the door. Will be interesting to see the effects once the boot gets done.

Does this make the car much quieter? And the door heavier? Been wanting to get some dynamat on my car for years!!

i quite like that idea. does it reduce the tinny noise of the door when you close it?

unsure if the coupe suffers from this, although as it's a pillar-less door, i'm guessing it does.

how easy is it to apply?

it was first thing i did on my car ,doors sound much better when opening/closing

Exactly what Marius said.

You just have to be aware of the thickness that you buy.

Silent coat for example comes in two thickness options, 2mm and 4mm. Not compared with the scraps of dynamat I have left about, but silent coat (2mm) is far more flexible to go on. It is probably thinner but there's nothing to say you can't double up.

The added weight soley depends on how much you put on. If the car was being built for EMMA (a sound quality competition for car audio) then the car would have 100% coverage and so forth.

You need to bear in mind that applying deadener will yeild diminishing returns. For most, its simply easier to just cover the big areas for maximum effect and minimum hassle.

Well after a day of perfect weather, everything is all in and working.

Need to tidy up the amp rack and processor tomorrow and from then on it's a case of spending the next 6 months tuning the system to pure perfection.

Pics to follow.

Not posted here in a while...no mods, but now sporting a debage.

Got this sneeky snap on my way to the library (where I'm meant to be revising but am editing...life of a procrastinator)

Upgrades by NeilllP, on Flickr

My front stage and sub stage of the audio system are slowly getting to the stage of which I'd be happy with. However the rear fill is highly lacking as my system is completely independent of the OEM system.

Therefore the plan is a 6.5" woofer from a JBL GTO-607c component kit, the respective crossover and a 3.25" bullet tweeter (A rebadged Pyramid TW18). The reason for a bullet tweeter? Well my front stage is all about the sq, and most of the time the rears will be hardly on (if at all) but for certain instances (e.g. songs or at a show) when I'd like a little more mids and highs, the rears will be used.Bullet tweeters give a very sharp edge to the mids and highs and therefore will be suited ideally for their job. Obviously the OEM Grill will be reapplied and no one looking in will be any wiser.

the plan is to use a JL Audio XD200/2 for the rear speakers with the amplifier mounted behind one of the speakers (given the technology heat shouldn't be an issue but if it does become one will simply relocate the amp)

Amplifier still is yet to be bought.

Update time...

exams all finished and so I started to play about with the rear speakers

found that the setup of a jbl gto-607c woofer, Hertz Hi-Energy 2 way crossover and an american legacy tweeter all behind there crossed over high pass @ 100hz gave a huge boost to the mids and highs and was really nice and punchy, currently powered from an Alpine mrp-f300

video of just the rears playing...any distortion heard is due to limitations from the mic. They are loud but more importantly clean and smooth in person.
