Negative reaction to the Zed by spectators?

Have any of you encountered extreme hostility, due all or in part to your Z4? I did tonight.

After leaving a bar in a nice local town where my friend's band was playing, me and another guy stopped into the all-night greasy spoon for a bite. I was driving my roadster. These two other guys came in a few minutes later and start in right away about f'ing rich people, f this and f that. I didn't pay them any mind, as it's midnight on Saturday, so I assumed they might have been drinking too much. They sat in the booth next to us. Then they began to complain about the interracial couple sitting a few tables away, calling them everything but human. This got on my nerves, but I was there for dinner, not a brawl, so I ignored them. When my buddy left the table to go to the bathroom, one of the guys says "Man am I glad he left. All that Wall St. talk bs. That mf'er should get a radio show. F'ing A******." Needless to say, we had been talking about the band at the bar we just left, not about stocks or Wall St. Idiots. When he came back, we paid and left, as we had finished eating.

As we get outside, I told my buddy that I thought we were about to have a problem with these two idiots. He had noticed them as well, but hadn't said anything. Oh well, we go to my car and I drop the top via remote before we get in. In my rear view, I noticed that Redneck #1 has gotten up from his table, walked to the full-length window facing the parking lot, and is standing at the window pointing to my car and telling his friend something. He's red in the face with anger and very animated with his gestures.

While these two were obviously looking for a fight, I've never had someone focus so much hate at me because of my car. I don't know if he thought we were gay (neither of us is) due to the number of "hairdresser" comments I see on the forum from the UK drivers, or if we were the subject of his rant about rich people, as he saw my car on the way in but didn't know who was driving it. All involved were white, so it wasn't a racial thing.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Not as extreme, but yes, I've had hostile receptions/reactions because of the car.

Unsurprisingly, it's always envy that drives hostility. People seem to convince themselves that because they can't have one, that all Z4 owners are evil. Or something that like that....

They just sound like drunk idiots looking for a fight, if it wasn't the car they'd have probably picked on something else, your shoes, haircut, accent, etc..

The only time someone has said anything was some guy in a modified Japanese monstrosity at a set of traffic lights, and even then it was just "nice ride bruv." Ie no idea if he was even being sarcastic or not.

Oh, and. A few of my mates with the hairdresser jibe, but that's just banter.

Thing is though these aren't even expensive cars. For £7k you can get a lovely one, which is about what, a used Golf would cost?!

I'm 26 and don't earn a massive amount of money by any stretch, and can comfortably afford mine.

I only get good comments, or questions about top speed, or requests to 'rev it mate' - and mine gets parked in some grotty places all over the country :P

They just sound like moron's mate unfortunately you get them in every country in the world
If it wasn't the car they would have found something else to hate

Yeah there are zeds kicking about the £4k mark now. The "haters" are generally quite ignorant and have no idea how cheap they are. It's easier to hate than to understand

Exactly. I have found that the people that make comments about my "expensive car" have no idea what it's worth. When I bought it at 3 years old, one guy (a cop) said it was probably worth about $60,000. That's more than it cost when new. I know it LOOKS like a million bucks, :driving: but come on.

I should point out that on the way into the parking lot, a group of teens were leaving and they all complimented my "nice car." I receive far more positive comments than negative ones, but these two rednecks tonight blew my mind.

I've had jealous looks before, but nothing like. It's not about your car, it's about 2 idiots looking for an excuse to start a fight.
I think you absolutely did the right thing by just walking away. You never know what such stupidity can lead to.

Two idiots looking for some trouble. you did the right thing.

Worst I've had in the Zed Roadster is someone gave me the w***er sign on the motorway.

I used to get far more abuse in the TT but not sure why.

My mate has a 458 and before that he had a California. He says he gets abuse almost daily.

That is true though, with my 911 I got more negative remarks than positive, even from people I called friends... It's insane how many people get green with envy and start calling you "rich b*stards"... Some people just don't seem to understand that we don't get these things for free. I worked hard for what I achieved.

I had some drunk moron slam his hand down on the back of my car a few week ago.
I was stopped in traffic not moving in the slightest. He insisted I nearly backed into him! I was fuming!

I get " flash bastard" etc gibes from the local chav lot.
Went to my local modified car meet like I do every month and my friends chirp up with "rich boys here" etc. doesn't bother me though, if they stopped crashing and getting points they could have as decent of a motor :D

A lot of people still think it's a 20k+ motor, which I think is where the envy comes from.

Always get questions from blokes in work asking how much I paid and why I bought a 2 seater. I don't have kids and hate having passengers. Simple.

Last week some diddy coys in some shitty white van kept driving next to me and beeping their horn like it would bother me. Just ignored them and they soon got bored. Another time I was on a 70mph road and some guy in a vw sharan taxi decided to slow down to 40mph (after doing 70mph) for no reason at all. Road ahead was clear. My guess is that I had my roof down and he didnt like this. No problem, I dropped it into 3rd, quickly overtook him, pulled infront, gave him a quick brake test then drove off after seeing the front end of his car dive down

I've had people spit at my cars in the past...but this is the one that gets me, when some people stop you and ask you how much your costs!!!!!! WTF!!! Not just once but ver the years, I've had quite a few people stop by passing me in the street and asking the question...

We're not allowed to call them "wite trash", so why would they be allowed to call us "rich b*stards" ?

I must admit, when people tell me it's "only" a 2-seater and not practical, I calmly state (as if it is the most normal thing in the world) we have an X1 and 1-series too. Usually that's when people stop talking to me

I've had this. My usual response is "not as much as you'd think" which defuses the ones with a "rich boy's toy" jibe and keeps the conversation open for those that have a genuine interest in the car. I got this more with the Alpina than with the M

Unfortunately in our times, brain dead people are allowed to reproduce and they do it really well.
End result is the ever growing population of "sans brain" people walking about. Add cheap alcohol and you are going to come up against agression and odd behaviour everywhere ....

I have a few ideas on how to solve this problem, but back here in the real world, the only solution is avoidance ..... :D

of course having a Zed makes avoiding ...... quite easy

They were out for trouble no matter what. Your car is noticeable so that's what they picked on.
Eejits.

I've had nothing but good comments apart from one elderly lady.
I was standing at the cash machine and the zed was parked right behind me. An elderly lady was walking round and round it having a good look. She saw me watching her and said, 'if you are going to buy a bmw why on earth would you buy it in that colour?'
I said, 'it's mine actually and I love it'.
I couldn't get rid of her for 15 mins, fell over herself to apologise and tell me about the ferrari's, merc, jags etc her family have owned.
Quite funny. I wished I had said to her, 'I know its an awful colour' then opened it and drove off!
