Needed a new runabout

I needed to replace my citroen C2 which I use for work so was looking around for a runner that might be a little more fun. I've owned roadsters of all types over the years, MGBs, Midgets, a TR7, Z4s, S2000, Triumph Spitfire MGF, but there was a gap in my roadster ownership so................

I'm buying a Mazda MX5.., Have found a nice tidy mark 2 with a dealer, full history, recent cam belts, service and a new hood. So I will soon be a two roadster owner. Her indoors will still have the X5 for those 'family moments' :) It will be a bit 'chalk and cheese' getting out of the MX5 into the Z4 but I should see a lot of top down motoring this Spring :driving:

It will be interesting to hear your comments on the 2 very different roasdter experiences.

Can't say it's a car I would opt for though, but as you say it's a missing one for a pretty good set you've owned.

Not fancy a Mk2/3 MR2? I see at least 2 MX5 everyday. The height of MX5 is even lower than Z4.

Mk3 MR2 I couldn't use as there's nowhere to chuck my work gear, do love them though. Mk2 I looked at seriously but decided the MX5 was cheaper to insure/run and probably more reliable. If I'd found a mint MR2 when I was looking at local dealers I might have been tempted though. Needed to part ex my son's Vectra so that was a constraining factor.

Got to admit I was very tempted by an MX5 and I also looked at MR2 Roadsters too. Both excellent driver's cars although I believe the MR2 is somewhat twitchy! My mate has an MR2 and loves his though, been a passenger many times. MX5's really are great fun to drive and chuck around.

The problem with both of them (for me) is the noise, or lack of: whatever I change to next will have to sound pretty special after living with a 6-cyl soundtrack...

Great car - with possibly my all-time favorite gearbox! Well, based on the MK1. I think people still underestimate the MX5.

MR2 space is silly, but does drive nicely (drove one last week), if a little fidgety - but that just makes it feel more sports car like. It was very odd driving from the other end of the car!

Given your current form, what exhaust are you getting for it? :poke:

Congratulations on the MX5 - great choice.

If handling is less than amazing it will respond well to 4 wheel alignment.

Picked the car up today. It has 17" wheels which don't compliment it in my opinion but other than that it drives very well for a 12 year old car.

I'll get some pics of it with it's big brother at the weekend. Handling is excellent and it really is good fun but when I pulled out to overtake a Type R nothing happened lol. I must remember which car I'm in before attempting that again.

Exhaust has a nice (quiet) rasp so I'm trying to ignore the urge to mod as this is meant to be an everyday work car. :)

What you need is this conversion! :P

Excellent choice and a very different driving experience to the Z.

I had one a few cars back and never failed to deliver. Agreed not the quickest (thou would keep up with a 2.0 :fuelfire: ) but much fun on B roads. Is it a UK or import ??? Be prepared for the "hairdresser car" comments!

Car is a UK basic spec, lock the doors with a key! I really do 'get' the MX5 thing after two days driving it. It is an incredibly well thought out car that delivers driving pleasure in spades. It would be great if BMW applied the same sort of thinking to the Z2 if it ever appears.

I intend to 'downsize' when the Z4M goes and just have one car so that I can work part time and not have to find so much money for servicing, parts, insurance etc etc. The MX5 gen 3 was always a real possibility. I'm pretty much convinced thats what I'll buy now :)

sammyz, I've had two Mk2.5 MX-5s both 1.8 and they were great fun. Not that fast all in all but a great drive anyway.
