Hi,
The wife-2-be has just landed a new job, and the commute is 120 mile a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

She currently drives a 1.4i Astra. Its not the most frugal to be honest.

We have a a budget of anywhere between 3-5k. I would even consider a 1-2k banger and run it for a year...times are tight..

The car MUST be the following:

- Saloon or hatchback.
- Very Reliable
- Must comfortably sit 4 large adults (Parents!!)
- Must have a bit of poke
- At least 40-50mpg...

I sold a 2001 B6 A4 1.9TDi a few months ago. If i knew she was going to get the job, i would have kept it. But it was starting to become expensive to repair!!!

Any advice? This diesel will be the workhorse tbh..

Many thanks

Polo TDI is great on fuel, maybe a little small.

Audi A2 TDI is crazy on fuel, diesels can get mid 60's mpg, good room and I like the design tbh, and with a remap they go quite well.

406 diesel, and use veggie oil mixed with diesel, one of the few that can take it straight up

a friend has got a little clio diesel for the same reason. fairly new so around the right price mark. he says they can get up to 70mpg on steady motorway runs.

as for its pokeyness not sure about that one

Clio is far too small mate.

Then again I suppose I could consider a golf...

agreed, i have one myself, tdi se 90hp model, brilliant car.....a little expensive to buy though

If you can find one at the right price, the Citroen C2 1.4HDi is a brilliant little car.

Handles really well, very comfy ride and does 65 mpg even when being pushed.

I used to run one up and down to Wales every weekend until some old git fell asleep in his car and rear-ended it at 60mph while it was parked outside my house. Luckily for him it was pretty much a glancing blow so he walked away, but it totalled the C2 because of the speed of the impact.

But I miss it, it was great fun and a funky little car that I think your wife would like...

In fact if you can get a new or good s/h one on a reasonable PCP I think it makes a sensible long-term second car.....

How about a Skoda Octavia TDi, or one of the older Passat TDis?

I have considered the Octavia. They are quite robust arent they?

The Octavia, Volvo S60 D5 and Passat are on the list also.

Regarding the Volvo's it seems you can get a lot of car for the money.

I also had a look at a Skoda Superb TDi for about £3500 a few months ago, but despite it claiming to have 65,000 miles, it looks like they'd had a family of monkeys in there as almost every bit of plastic looked like they'd had wild animals scratching at it.

I got a focus tdci sport 3 door down the auction 110k on the clock 50 mpg 53 plate for 2K had it three months , all its cost so far is two tyres and and mot ( wich it flew through) well pleased there will be plenty of focus about for your buget my bro in law is a ford tech and said there not any major probs with the early models the newer shape have french bits engine etc not so good

Hi guys,

I think i have fallen for a 1-series 120d. Defo over-budget, but very usable for daily car..

I have been loaned one today by the stealer, its a great car. Obviously i will remap it..

When i was doing a lot of miles i bought a s60 D5, highly recomended.

Basically the comfiest car ever made, fast, great sound system, safe incase it goes pear shaped and it would get a real 54mpg all day long with very little effort.

I put 140k on mine before it started to cost anything, clutch lasted just over 130k.

The SE spec with the winter pack is the one to go for.

After that i bought a bmw 120 and regretted it within 2 months, within 6 months i couldnt wait any longer to get rid of it.

summing like this would be ideal - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/200930338441262/sort/pricedesc/usedcars/make/volvo/model/s60/price-to/5000/keywords/d5/radius/1500/page/1/postcode/dl14jz?previous=%2Fsearch%2Fresults%2Fusedcars%2Fpostcode%2Fdl14jz%2Fradius%2F1500%2Fmake%2Fvolvo%2Fmodel%2Fs60%2Fkeywords%2Fd5%2Fprice-to%2F5000%2Fpage%2F1%2Fsort%2Fpricedesc&anchor=advert200930338441262&logcode=p
