Need New Caliper(s)

My right front brake has been sticking so I have had it to the garage today for them to have a look and to service all the brakes.

It has come away from the garage with the brakes all cleaned up but still with the problem of the right front sticking, the guy tells me that im gonna need a new caliper.

My question is.... Where is the best place to get calipers from?
How much are they?
And do I need to replace both fronts?

I am probably just looking at buying standard BMW parts.

Dealer price is about £220, but you may be able to get it cheaper, or you my get away with rebuilding it.
 
I've always got away with re-building taking care to clean everything, but even when done properly you may find that the problem returns if you stand the car for weeks at a time. If it's in fairly regular use it could be fine, but it depends on the state of the components.

Not sure on cost or best place to buy but avoid reconditioned unless they come well recommended, they may be no better than your home refurbished units and a warranty is a fat lot if you keep needing to swap units.

No need to replace both if the other is in good working order, although if you do decide to re-build I would do both whilst you are jacking/filling/bleeding, the second is always much quicker anyway!

Are calipers easy to take apart and rebuild yourself? Im ok with a spanner but Ive never done much work on brakes before.

Inkey... Do eurocarparts do descent quality parts? (as good as bmw?)

If u goto BRAKEPARTS INTERNATIONAL,you can buy ATE/BUDWEG REFURBED CALIPERS,that come with a 2 year/24000mls warranty,and oem parts. thay cost around £60-70 EACH/ I.E ££120-140 PER PAIR,as oppose to £220+ from BMW,and u can also return the old caliper(s) for a refund of £20 each,which they use to refurb!

Alternatively,i will have a pair of 2nd hand 330i/ z4 3.0si(facelift) Calipers for sale in the next few weeks,though u will need to source caliper carriers for these,off ebay. these are for the larger 325mm discs/as oppose to 300mm ones on pre facelift 3.0'i.

Im gonna have a look at BRAKEPARTS INTERNATIONAL, thanks for the tip although I think im leaning more towards new calipers than refurbished ones.

Let me know how you get on with yours.
 
Jimmygee,i have not got these fitted as yet(waiting for new discs n pads to arrive), but i have got the refurbed calipers sitting in my spare room waiting to be fitted,and the qaulity looks great from them,and the warranty is the same as BMW's on brand new stuff/so well worth a look :D
Wil let u know as soon as they are all fitted :) :driving:

Jimmy Gee; I've never had any issues in the past. They supply ATE, Pagid, Eicher and Textar discs for instance. IMO you wont really go wrong with Pagid calipers for road use.

I've not done a Zed but it's typically not difficult. Removing parts can be a bitch and may have to get quite physical with mallet to remove parts or split units, bolts and pins etc are also bound to be stuck (I had hells own job getting just the wheel off my Zed a few weeks ago - stuck tight). If you clean parts properly and take care with rebuilding per the kit instructions it's just a case of being methodical and careful with the new seals! A brake bleeding kit, fluid to coat internal parts/re-fill and tiny bit of copper grease for fittings and the back of pads (not the pad faces or discs!) are a must to complete the job. A torque wrench and data should be used and it's worth checking if any special BMW tools are required before stripping down.

I would check the prices of overhaul kits and parts before deciding on the way forward.
