Need help identifying possible suspension noise

I keep hearing a clunk noise coming from the passenger rear shock area.

It sounds like either a loose (heavy) nut, or a marble knocking inside a can. It happens pretty much only when the passenger side rear wheel goes over a man-hole cover and occassionally when I go over speed bumps slowly. It doesn't happen when I turn either left or right. It doesn't happen when I'm simply going straight over rough roads.

If I'm driver, the noise seems to come from the trunk area over my right shoulder. If I'm sitting in the passenger seat, it sounds like it's coming from the shock area. I even climbed into the trunk while mister_roger drove the car around. I did hear the clunk a few times, but still had trouble finding the source, but I don't think it's any of the plastic trim inside the trunk.

I took out my Koni rear shock for inspection. Aside from a little bit of oil at the top adjustor, the shock appeared clean; but I don't know for sure if the shock is blown or not. I did re-tigthen the rear-shock mount so I'm certain it isn't the RSM making the noise.

Could this be related to the loose swaybar mount bolt issue that the Z4M's seem to have? Maybe a loose muffler mounting bolt?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds just like a broken spring to me but if you've checked everything then perhaps others can help.....

yup, same as the sound my broken spring made on the drivers side rear a few months ago...it sounds like there is a stone stuck on the prtective tray under the car, but it is in fact your spring.

Overtime it will eventually ping off, but tbh you might not want to wait for that to happen...

here,s a little thing i came across when i had a similar noise on the pass side rear.i thought it mite be a broken spring so i jacked up the car and took off the wheel to have a look,No broken spring!!i banged the rear hub with my hand,as you do while investigating,it revealed a loose outer brake pad.i banged it with my hand again and sure enough it was rattling in the carrier.i stuck some sticky backed anti-squeal material, that i had from working in a ford rs garage,to the back of the pad and it acted like a cushion.it is now quiet as a mouse and has stopped a few sleepless nite's worrying. :D

Sorry about the late reponse and thanks again for your opinions.

The noise was due to a blown Koni shock.

Glad you found it. I hate tracking downs noises and craks as they always seem to come from somewhere else and are hard to replicate.
Looks like that little oil leak on the shock was the clue in the end.
