Need a new stereo ! can i swap ?

Hey all, im having trobule with my stereo, it wont play CD's and the cd changer connected to it works, and ejects discs and have checked it workf fine in another car so i have come to the conclusion i need to change the stereo, which im assuming is just the unit mounted in the dash ? what im wondering is, if i buy a second hand one off ebay from a salvage car, will it plug straight in or will i need to get it decoded by BMW ?

I would have thought that it would just be a plug and play affair.

If anything, you just need to check what unit you currently have and what you're replacing with.

One won't play mp3 cd's (silver in colour)

Also I believe that the top end (carver) system is fully digital. Alothough I can't confirm if it is digital out from the headunit direct to the amplifer or analogue from the headunit to another processor and then on to the amplifier.
