Ok iam buying a laptop for the missis , she just needs it for surfing , emails and applying for jobs .
She doesn't like tablets or apple so as the sales are almost upon us what would you recommend with a price up to £350 ish or what should we look out for as in processor memory etc cheers in advance
Ps iam a complete novice when it comes to laptops etc so be gentle

In descending order of processor

Core i5 (maybe if you're lucky in the sales)
Core i3 (should be possible)
Pentium Dual Core
Celeron Dual Core

Go for a min of 3GB of memory

Biggest hard disk you can get in budget

With manufacturers trying to get to as low a price point as possible on Ultrabook standards. You should be able to get a good "standard" laptop in your price point.

Acer is a good value brand

bought this for teen daughter for xmas http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Pentium-DVDSM-DL-Windows-Premium/dp/B007UMJZE8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356464657&sr=8-1
no complaints as yet

That Lenovo is very nice, and very good value... Need a laptop for WB for his birthday, nice one Stuart  :D

Just for a lenova for my brother for xmas around £300

I will find you a link, playing with it today lots very good

And for the intended use is perfect

Although would you not prefer a netbook over a full size laptop?

Core i5 for about £399 which is a fairly good price. If Wee Bing is thinking games, then I'd try and get him an i5 based system

I've had a i5 Asus for the past year and have been really pleased with it... one of the few cheaper laptops to have a metal palm rest.

bought a sony viao webbook for my daughter - and its just about the worst thing I have ever seen, utter utter rubbish - Id ebay it if i wasnt afraid of the terrible feedback, even she wont use it and shes 9.

bought a windows 8 touchscreen for my wife - and she loves it . I hear windows 8 isnt loved at a technical level but new windows operating systems never are. touchscreen is the future i think, and having a proper keyboard makes a difference over an ipad.
