Need a Multimeter - Price vs Quality compromise

just out of curiosity, how do you intend to check the battery is draining?

My first task will to Google it

I have a Multimeter. It's the first time I've done owt like this. Thought it would be easier to try it at home rather than rely on garages all the time.

The first thing I wanted to do was check the alternator. Looking on Youtube I believe I have to check the output of the battery with the engine off, then start the engine and see if the output has increased. Something like that. Can you tell I'm winging this slightly..!

Then I read that I should turn the engine off, let the car 'switch off' after 15 mins or so, and see what the current battery drain is. God knows what settings to put the multimeter on, but that's one for Google again. If the drain is above the desired level (haha, whatever that is!) then I should start pulling fuses to see which ones reduce the drain.

Am I along the right lines here? Any tips would be greatly received

the meter needs to be put in series with the battery

if there is a I would remove the fuses which may determine which circuit is drawing the current
