Need a more comfortable car

It looks like the Zed is going to have to go, I have been renting for 6 months because my wife has a back problem and it's getting better but we are getting older and the Zed is not the easiest to get out of and hard suspension and run flats is not the most comfortable ride.
So need suggestions for something comfortable but still looks sporty and as I have retired now more economical than the Zed, I still get 30 to 32 mpg which I think is good for a 3.0SI but not so good on less income, second hand and up to £7,000, I suggested a Seat Leon 2.0TDI to my wife but she was not impressed and suggested an Audi TT but I think that is also not the easiest to get out of as it is low on the road.
Any ideas welcome.

Can't see a TT being much, if any, different to a zed if im honest. Personally i would look down the route of a 5er m sport for that money. Should see you in a decent spec model and will be plenty of comfortable and still look decent.

My wife has a TT and it's much higher than the zed, obvious when I look at them side by side on our drive. Easier to get in and out of by far.

Mind you our TT is not a S-Line model and the zed is an Msport, so these are two opposite extremes of ride height.

I like both of our cars, we tend to use the zed more in the good weather and the TT is a diesel quattro which makes it much better for wet and icy weather, as far as comfort goes there's not much difference IMO.

The TT is much easier to get in and out of than the Z... the only issue with the TT is the tall door sills so you have to almost step over them to get in.

The driving position is higher... and with the flat bottom steering wheel makes it easier to get in and out without touching the seat bolsters... only issue is the seat belts are quite far behind.

And I am comparing it to my TTS so lower then a standard TT.

My wife was begging to struggle to get in and drive my Z before i parted with it - being a few months pregnant.. recon with the TT she could probably drive her self while in labour to the hospital!!

Only downside is the TT isnt as sporty as the Z... but and i dont find it as economical - but then a FWD TFSI shouldgive a good few MPG more than my TTS - which has averaged 27 so far - vs my 3.0si having 30.2mpg.

E90/E91/E92 3 Series. Very comfy and nice cruiser. Even with M sport suspension its a nicer ride then an S Line A4.

Any VAG 2.0TDI or 2.0T will be fine. Personally find the S-Line suspension a little frustrating on A4 and smaller models, based on your budget of 7K this will get you the older gen models.. the s-line on lets say a 2006 A4 2.0T is not as uncomfortable as a Z4M which I have (@adamski :poke: ) - But is quite choppy on crap roads.

See most responders are mentioning Audi and BMW's, was hoping for a few other makes to consider, this getting hire cars is getting expensive but wife is still not keen to let the Zed go, don't think she has realised that I have retired with huge drop in income.

As to the insurance court appearance it was very fast, not many criminal types in the lobby, got my hopes up when talking to the guy waiting with me who had been paying for 4 years on an insurance, the company did not renew on the fifth year and did not tell him. He went in before me and came out with only a £300 fine and no points. I went in and the clerk read out my statement and I elaborated about being at sea but made no difference £395 fine plus court costs plus 10% victim surcharge total £520.00 and 6 points, they were very polite and when I pulled a face at 6 points the senior magistrate said it could have been 8 points so I said nothing more except thank you. I think it would have been the same had I not attended but at least I tried, fine is based on income so lucky I was retired by the time it came to court.

Put my new details into gocompare to check next insurance cost got some good quotes at around £450 for full comp so not as bad as I thought it could be, it was a long wait from 13th June to 10th Feb to find out what was going to happen.

Another option is a merc... The c coupe is lovely and looks sporty. With you £7k budget you could get a CLC coupe.

The wife has an slk... Bit dull to drive but interior comforts are brilliant.

Just make sure you dont mistake the foot (hand) break for a clutch as i nearly did one

I test drove a 2 litre TDi Seat Leon FR and loved it! Extremely capable car that would more than embarrass a Z on country lanes. Drives just like a Golf which is essentially what it is. Not sure if this model is available for your budget but I would imagine getting close to being so.

...10% victim's surcharge?! I'm sorry did I miss something - who was the victim? I thought there was a misunderstanding regarding an automatic insurance renewal whilst you were offshore that was detected by ANPR and an honest mistake! Bastards...!

You get a victim surcharge for everything that goes to court, including speeding fines. No victims there and even when there are victims, they will never see the money so it is just tax.

My burglar that was caught would have paid the same, I never saw a penny.

For the money you want to spend a 2.0 Mazda 6 2009/10.They are reliable, good comfort,40 mpg on a run.
I have had a 2009 model for the past 3 yrs,so can vouch for all of the above.
