Need a bigger drive!

That's another one saved - great news.
I am at the lower end tbf. Picking up borderline cases and giving them maybe just a few more years life. Hopefully that'll work?
Sad thing is, I can recover this one, sell it in the Spring and someone could by it and break it with all the bits I'll put on to sort it.
Most important bit for me is keeping it cheap enough to get new owners into the marque without a huge outlay.
At least I have the advantage of it being a 'just don't lose money' hobby, so I'm not having to earn my crust from it. That helps everyone.

Mate, the oil around the solenoids is a normal feature on the N46. Mine had it when i bought it 8 years ago. I have had the sollies out a few times to clean & inspect them, replaced the o rings with new, completely de greased and cleaned the area and within a month or so the greasy oily film appears again :idunno:

A friend who also has the N46 is exactly the same, so i dont worry anymore, i just degrease them occasionally. Perhaps you might get to the bottom of it and let us know.

Cheers, tug.

Good to know Tug, thank you.
I'll go for your route first.
The car has only done a few hundred miles in the last two years so initially it stinks of burning oil on start up. But after the run home I started it again yesterday morning and no smell at all.
I have no doubt I will be picking your 4-pot brain many more times before we're done.

what's the initial views on 4 pot goodness versus the comfort of 6 pots? enjoying it?
Refuse to pay for August tax for 3 days, so not been back out in it yet.
Really nice chap let me test drive it and I ended up back at my place.
Liked it so much I transferred him the money and kept it.
I think he probably cancelled his tax then.

But I have to say, apart from the lack of soundtrack, I was very pleasantly surprised. Having followed Jock in his a few times I can understand now that you need to drive it much differently. Use it's good balance to maintain momentum through the bends instead of relying on grunt to accelerate you up again.
For the B-road blast to Stowmarket and back for me it is going to be a real hoot; and at 40+ mpg it'll definitely suit me for my winter daily.

Funny thing is that it's only just shy of the power of my old 2.8i Capri, and handles much better. Back in the day my Capri was reckoned to be something 'Special' (spot the pun). But now what is basically a bottom of the range car would run rings around it............................ quietly. :D

nice- good to know
Honestly! I've always been straight six or nothing, but now I think everyone should try a 4-pot with an open mind and assess it as a car in its own right. Don't compare, contrast.

on that basis i probably need to get one

Well you've had most of the rest!

If you do get one it would be interesting to see what you think of it.

Just eyeing up that one on Facebook for sale in Guildford...

Martin isn't the only one who needs a bigger drive

At one point today I had an E89 in the garage, a 3.0i, a 2.5i, and 3x 2.0i on the drive. The two visitors for roof motor relocations both had 06-plates. One facelift and one pre-facelift.

Given that the electrical connectors are exposed and that most degreasers say to rinse off with water, what do you use to degrease yours?
Is it simpler to remove them, then degrease while they're out of the way?

Hit me up if you need a scout. I pass that sort of way fairly frequently. In fact going to see Ross in Hook next Wednesday.
