Nearly Sideways!

Hi,

Well last night i was pulling out of the same junction i always do bearing in mind i have to jump across one lane and nip out.

So i see a gap its tight but i know its not dangerous. Well go across as soon as a cars past and as soon as im nearly striaght give it some welly! It felt like the back end really step out and and my console was flasing a yellow indicator like mad!

Anyway thinking about it it was either loose gravel between the lane or the road damping down but gave me a shock.

Anyone else had a scare recently? Im very careful to be honest as i know this time of year catches people out.

I suffer this more than I used to with my old E46 coupe,

Guss it because of the RFT's, and being lighter at the back

Honestly I've not yet pushed my car sideways yet. Some slight tail slides but nothing major. I try to keep from doing it unless the road is clear. Granted it sounds like yours was almost completly unexpected. Perhaps some oil or something on the road?
 
It's easy to get mine going sideways. I try not to do that on public roads :D - I think I may want to master throttle steering :lol:

I know the feeling. I turned DSC off one day and made a right rurn doing about 25 and hit the throttle.... :o
Scared the heck outta me!! Never again!
 
It probably felt like it stepped out a lot more than it actually did.

I can make mine do it almost at will (and that's on an auto) with any combination of cold tyres, exessive right foot, turning the steering, or poor surface and of goes DSC.

Scary when it takes you by surprise though
 
After reading your incident, glad to hear that you are safe....

I had a similiar experience, when I was very much younger driving a 69 Mustang in wet weather, at taking a
corner I went sideways for very good length, was scared SH#% that I was was going to careen
into many parked cars, but I was fortunate to regain control.

I agree that unexpected road conditions are very dangerous, everything from falling objects from cars ahead, to animals running across the road....
 
Sounds like fun to me 8) . Seriously though, you need to get on a track. Nothing eases your mind more then when you know those unexpecteds aren't in the equation; you'll learn a lot more.
 
Go talk to Cliff on Bimmerfest. He managed to flip his coupe on dry roads on a sunny day on a road he drives every day. Never take your car or it's grip for granted.

I should point out that Cliff actually knows how to drive well, this wasn't the case of someone with more power than brains or skill.

I remain unconvinced on that one Yal. In his own words a corner he takes the corner fast and then applied the throttle exiting it. Perhaps complacancy with a corner he enjoys or just got it wrong eventually as he does it every day.

Thanks for the replys, to be fair i wasn't posting to boast just got me by suprise!

Ive got the boxster without any driver asist and had that step out in certain weather conditions! This felt different more like the back stepped then the car moved sideways.

So whats the deal with the Flashing dash? Does it take full control and reduce or apply power to different wheels to bring it back around or is it simply saying "keep your head down you've lost it mate"?

I did it just the other day. Was coming home on a clear road(slightly damp though!), following my dad in his porker turbo. Left a roundabout and then as we both flew up the road my back kicked way out! Thank god for the traction control. When I pulled up next to my dad he was killing himself laughing saying 'If mine is twitching you can bet your ass yours will!' :D
I insisted the traction control was off and it was all part of my plan :P

Retards ignition and applies braking to regain control :thumbsup: The light is just to let you know to take it a little easier next time :lol:
