Near to buying a Z4M roadster...

Probably tell you there is no movement on price to stop you knocking the price down on the phone, then get there and try knock more off when you spot something that needs doing / potentially needs doing in a few months.

Car selling has changed in that people now spend 5 mins chatting on the phone and then believe that is enough interest to warrant money off.

Turn up in person, look at it and kick the tyres, then sit down and do the negotiation is the way it should be mainly done and is what these dealers are trying to achieve.

The only time which I break the above is when the car is 2+ hours away and I spend ages getting detailed info on the car, check the history and explain I am wanting to travel and will take the car that day so long as it all checks out as they describe. At that point there I have had no problem negotiating a discount by phone.

As mentioned above, you might not get money off the new car, but you might get £500 over the book value of your car - concentrate on the cost to change I guess as that is the most important figure.
 
^^^ This. Good advice. A sales person is not going to spend their time haggling on the phone if you have not even seen the car. They believe their price is right for them, and whilst there is pretty much always room to move they won't do it until they know you're serious about buying, and that means being there in person. Though you know that.
 
They have all said this in person.
Nottingham are the first to do this over the phone before we have seen it.

Is buying one with no sat nav a big down point?

For some yes for others no. For me I wouldn't have considered a car without it it was my number one option to have.
 
Generally, if you're worried about resale value/ease of resale, then you need nav.

If you're buying the car to keep and/or not bothered about the value, leave the nav (if you don't want it).

For what it's worth, it took me about the same amount of time/effort to sell my Z4 without nav as it did to sell my second one with nav.
 
The nav with updated maps is fine, but if you're used to using a TomTom or similar then you could live without it. Reasons for having nav :

Potentially resale value as IK says
Personally I prefer having my nav built in, it's useful if you have bluetooth connectivity with your phone, and I think it breaks up the large expanse of dash - many disagree
It is better for display of DSP settings if you have the upraded hifi system - I think...
You want to use an Intravee for connecting an iPod / iPhone and also want to have access to some of the programming features provided by the unit

Reasons to not have nav :

You use a removable nav system already
Got an aux port / will fit one so don't want / need an Intravee
You hate how it looks
It really doesn't matter to you

Just my tuppence worth. I would want it, unless the car was otherwise so good I just had to have it irrespective.
 
I tend to plan my routes before I leave, which funnily enough is where built in nav comes in handy...

If you get almost there, but can't quite find what you're looking for, you just drop it into the nav, and you're sorted - no messing with wires, etc.
 
Just noticed that the black one in Nottingham has got the 'comfort pack' but no PDC.
PDC is shown as included on the comfort pack list.
The OH thinks this means its been rear ended and has had a replacement bumper at some point.
Is this right?

Also: another one we have found has only done 800 miles in two years, but has just had a service and MOT. (Not by BMW or specialist)
Is this a big no no?

They could have just gotten the spec wrong, or someone has chosen/retrofitted cupholders and that has misled the dealer. By the same token, mine has PDC but did not have cupholders or nets. Remember that you don't always have to spec the pack, you can buy bits of it separately.

Where was the other one serviced ? If not BMW or a Specialist then Kwik Fit ? If so then I am sure someone with an M will have something to say... The last service of mine before I bought it was at Kwik Fit, but it's a 3.0 not an M.
 
I would question it having been serviced correctly there - maybe they are very good, but there's nothing on that site about their servicing capabilities or services.
 
Nav on my z is on par with an ashtray on a bike... Pdc you can nearly touch the back bumper from the seat..

Best go for low miles, right colour, full sh, and the right price :-)...

But in all honesty it's going to lose money so just buy one to enjoy it....

Very philosophical of you, and very true!
 
My must haves were -

50k miles or under
Full BMW history or specialists
Sat nav
PDC
Updated speakers
Cupbolders (I hate blanking plates)
6 cd changer
No modifications
Any colour apart from yellow or Titan silver


None of the many I have looked at have all of this, so a compromise will need to be made
 
Don't stress about the cupholders - you can get a set plus blanking plates from BMW Direct on ebay new for about £90 and they are real easy to fit. Not a huge amount of money in the scheme of things.

You should be able to find what you want, even with the mileage requirement... It'll just take time.
