Navigation/Radio display

The Navigation/Radio/Computer display is not working on my 2003 Z4 3.0. Was working fine, then started the car and it didn't come on. Checked all the fuses and they are OK. What next?

Does the screen still move up and down?
Does the screen itself look powered, but isn't receiving anything to display, or does it look like it's not coming on at all?

If it's moving up and down, but doesn't look like the screen is turning on... then it'll either be heat related (Wait till it cools off a bit and try again), or its dead :(
If it's not moving at all, recheck the fuses, take the unit out and check a cable hasn't come undone, and failing all that, chances are it's dead :(
if it's moving up and down, and it looks like the screen is on but not receiving, it could either be the fuse in the dvd unit, the cable between the two, or it's dead :(

Chances are... it's dead.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news

No the screen doesn't move up and down on its own. Will close manually, however. The screen is black. The radio is still working, but there is no display.

Hi.
Having just had a problem with my Satnav on my 2003 3.0 I may be able to offer a few pointers.
There are basicly 3 parts that are the common reason for failure. The DVD drive packs up, the laser fails (or becomes dirty and can't read the disc.) or finally the motherboard fails.

If you have a software disc try and load that. If you get any error messages then the motherboard is clearly working and you will be looking at a DVD fault or laser related issue. Fortunately, mine was just a dirty laser fixed by an independent guy after my BMW dealer tried to charge me £2500 for a new nav unit.

If you can confirm the fault as being with the DVD drive or laser you can buy both parts individually or together as a unit from the net. Removing the nav unit is a fiddle but straight forward enough. Search for my previous thread on my MK4 Satnav failure. Some of the regular contributors on the forum gave me some good link for its removal etc.

Anyone ever used Hi-Tech Electronic Services in Van Nuys, CA to repair BMW navigation units or other electronics? My local BMW shop (not the dealer) told me mine couldn't be repaired. Hi-Tech tells me they've never seen one they couldn't repair. The BMW shop also told me my problem is in my monitor; the monitor screen is black. Hi-Tech told me that 95% of the time, the problem is in the navigation unit, not the monitor. If anyone has had experience with this company, I'd like to hear your thoughts.
