Navigation Portable Pro

Just booked our car to have the semi-integrated Nav fitted. Car goes in Next Wednesday.
BMW sells two different add-on Nav units.

The current generation Portable Plus is based on a Garmin 3760 and Portable Pro is based on a Garmin 3790. Both fit the same BMW mounting bracket and interface with the car audio.

Garmin branded units will fit in the BMW mount but don't have the software needed for the car interface.

Fitting the mount could be done as a DIY, but the radio needs to be coded.

Dealer quoted me £380 for the Portable Pro and the mount + .5 hour labor to code the radio OR £490 installed. Add in the cost of fuel and I decided to let the dealer do the job. We have £350 hill-start credit, so cost to us is £140. A Garmin 3790 is about £225 from Amazon.

I'll post updates. . .

Gsm got a trade-assist for a new car with automatic transmission.

Our situation was different. At first we were told our car would have hill start. Just a few days before we took delivery our dealer confirmed the car wouldn't have hill start. I might have been able to get more if I pushed back harder.

Dealer also gave us seal and protect at no cost. I'll take it for free. It is nice not having to rush to get some wax on the car. They put a very few swirl marks on the car. I'll get around to taking them out, but they aren't easy to spot unless you give the car a very critical look.

The interior protection seems to be working too. it was very easy to get a few marks out of the leather.

yeah i guess you can push quite hard if you need to but if you arent too bothered about it then getting a few extras instead cant be a bad thing

something like hill start wouldnt be an issue for me and i guess im not going to be fussy about the swirl marks either as i wont be keeping the car after my 3 years :)

Swirls show more in the darker colors.

I'm not upset about a couple of light swirl marks. They are hard to spot. I didn't notice them until I gave the car a very critical look over. Car looks fine from 2 feet away. From 10 inches and at just the right angle you can see the marks.

I'll polish them out in a few weeks. I'm in no rush. Need to order some Meguiars 9 for the marks and a bottle of 82 for the rest of the car. I'll order a bottle of 83 to have on hand if the 9 doesn't work. I know I can get the car to shine better than it does now. Just need to find the time to do it by hand or the money for a DA polisher.

From five inches away, there is a some orange peel too. Just about all production paint jobs have some these days. Nothing I can do about that short of getting a very expensive show car repaint. Not about to do that.
