Nav Retrofit

So, I went to look at a nice looking ///M today and I was having a little nose about in the centre console before I realised that it didn't have nav. Now I'm currently thinking that no nav is a deal breaker for me as the only thing I hate more than having wires all over the dash and sucker marks on the windscreen is those single din flip up screen things.

However I am aware that this has been retrofitted in the past (even with but-clenching cuts in the dash) and I think I'm up for doing it. However, I also seem to remember BMW had discontinued the loom required to do it. Is this the case? Also has anybody done this recently?

well before I bought my Zed I saw one with nav fitted and in my opinion it was awful it was a thick screen and very dated indeed and after that I knew I didn't want it I would much prefer my work tom tom even with sucker marks on the screen the BMW one was just horrid! As for retro fitting it don't bother :)

TBH - factory nav is a little dated so I opted for this instead:

All you need to source is the screen, you don't need the loom, the GPS antenna, the DVD drive etc:

A few of us have done it in the past.

You are right reference the loom. There was a complete kit on eBay a week or so ago which included a tv tuner for £800.

The other option is to butcher an X3 loom which a member on here did.

What ever you do bank on it costing around £600 unless prices have changed.

If you're still looking - there is a kit on eBay at the moment

I've got the nav system and in all honesty you'd be absolutely mental to pay £760 for it.

It's the one thing that really bugs me.

The free Sat Nav app on my iphone is FAR more advanced and the whole look and feel of it is dated.

If you have ANY other option then take it!

Indeed - I opted for another option personally, but if someone really wants to retrofit the OE navigation system, then I don't think that's a bad deal for all the bits you need. The loom is otherwise near impossible to source!

There are other benefits of factory nav if you plan on using an intravee and ipod.

I'm sure you could get that ebay lot for 700 or less though.

At least my BMW satnav gets me properly to where I need to go, both my TomTom and brand new Garmin are hopeless with directions and routing.

The OEM nav comes in for a fair amount of flack, I think unfairly. It's lightning fast at calculating routes and recalculating. The only real downside are the very basic graphics and lack of full postcode search.

agreed

The satnav unit is over 11 years old, so what do people expect? try digging out your 10 year old TV and compare it to todays 4k flatscreens

ZZzzzz

Fully agree on that Stuart. The BMW system is like a Unix system, the Garmin / Tom Tom world a windows system. The BMW system vastly superior in the calculations and routing features compared to the flaky Garmin / TomTom that will let you down as soon as you enter a tunnel or are surrounded by high buildings.

But, like the Unix systems, the user side is not the prettiest but give me the raw power any day.

Or I could try looking in the corner of the living room :o :(

Did whoever it was complete the Android conversion? I haven't seen anything on it for a while?

Nearly... http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=56746

It works, and everything is fitted. I really need to revisit some of the Arduino code / but in essence.. it's mostly done.

Any videos of it in action?

I'm sure 11 years ago it was bang up to date but if i had the choice now with the other technology available these days i would try an alternative and certainly wouldn't spend £750 on it.

A 10 year old TV is absolutely worthless these days.
