Nav retrofit question.

Mind the monitor. A lot are advertised as suitable for X3 and Z4, and they are not all the same. The X3 one has a lip at the dashboard end as that goes into the dash, whilst the Z4 one goes over the edge (so no lip, just a bend at the end).

The GPS aerial is universal, and I paid $20 for it new on ebay (with 5 metre lead as you need to go from the MKIV unit to the dashboard through the car). The cable harness is cheap from the dealer - about $120 (I paid £55)

any link for the GPS antenna? Its like $120 from dealer

oh and how about the cut out template?

im thinking like $500 at least to do this mod... wow and i already have a handheld BUT indash is 100000x better!

I use my handheld for cruises, so don't give that one up. I actually bought the handheld AFTER I had the BMW one
 
I paid $1500 for all the parts. I bought CID(radio), Nav. monitor and the computer for $1100 on Ebay. and everything else at the dealership.

+ the mounting screws are in the middle and Z4 has screws on the bottom.

3 tabs on top of the dashboard you have to make(cut out). And the bottom 2 tabs are already there.
 
DHK - you still had to cut out a bit of the soft dash top though to rest the monitor in?

Must admit, you made a nicer hole then I did - but at the end of the day it is all covered by the monitor anyway.

Yes, I had to cut it out.
True. It doesn't have to be nice and smooth. The monitor covers the area and it looks great.
 
ok i swear there were plenty of Screens and Nav radio on ebay and now there aren't any.. wtf lol

and why are people selling the DVD drives for like $500+? it will be a while before i get this done

Hey everyone! This is the best retrofit topic that I have found so far. I am almost ready to start this project (bidding on the last part, MK4 on ebay right now) but have a bunch of Qs!
First of all, I have the CID, the monitor, the harness and hopefully MK4. Is there anything else that I need?
Also, can you send me the cut-out template? I am still not clear on how to make the top 3 tabs :( Any of you guys who have done it has a photo walkthrough or ANY walkthrough? Toooo many question! Thanks in advance :)
 
i understand the NAV cars have onboard computer built in tot he nav units... does yours work?

\and can you getaway with not tearing apart the entire back?!

i'm looking for short cuts lol maybe mount this sucker int he trunk isntead of the console where it's already crowded with s**t lol

It works great! No problems so far.
No, drivers side panel has to come off.
I guess you can put it in the trunk but every time you would update the software or maps, you would have to tear your trunk apart.
BTW, I like that nav. computer there, it looks cool.
 
where is the hole to reach the trunk do you know? I won't ever have to touch the DVD unit so it can be hidden somewhere. no need to tear anything apart to slide in a single DVD ;)
