Looking for a 1 TB NAS o be used for centralised data storage (think Excel files). Not for movies etc, just business use.

Seen Buffalo Terastation and Iomega Storcentre Pro NAS for around the gbp 450 mark.

Any thoughts / experiences on these devices and which ones to avoid / recommend?

I have installed a number of the Buffalo LinkStation Pro's and they have all worked as expected. The only issue I have is they file system does not like robocopy - my fav command line back up tool :(

1TB of Excel Files sounds interesting :o

Thanks John.

Are the files accessable / transferrable via FTP? As the main servers and storage are off-site, I want to FTP (using command files ..) the relevant data sets from the remote sites back to the local site overnight.

This would include SQL backup files etc

From memory they do not have an FTP server by default, but I have read about various hacks to install such things.

I have them working in a similar environment but use a vpn so the share on the linkstation is available to our remote server to backup its data.

I was going to say that the Terastations are abysmally slow, but I don't think you care about that. I've got two in a workgroup config. They just don't play well in my AD environment.

I personally like the iomegas that are built on win2k storage server. Or is it 2k3? thing's been up for ages, and i use robocopy with a scheduled event to back up the data on a server in taiwan (locally, not over the WAN).

im looking for something similar for home use and have just spotted these guys:

can't recommend one but i need RAID SATA so there's not too many that are cost effective..

One of the guys here in my office has one of those... he loves it! Not seen it working myself so I'm just going off what he says.

I just bought the Buffalo at Dabs.com for 440 gbp. Is RAID5, and has the two additional USB devices as well.

Took less then 2 minutes to fully configure and is now up and running. Speed seems ok (connected via Gb connection to my network).

Very pleased with the ease of use and on some of the laptops, I have installed the Memeo software which does the auto backup stuff as well
