OK APOLOGISE FOR BIG RANT HERE: But your post got me thinking...
In todays modernised market... funny or novelty business names are not held in high esteem with the majority of the people looking for a quality service which ultimately a hair cut should be. The novelty name will distract the attention away from what actually matters and thats excellent service!
If the business truly wants to have repeat bookings, and a broad customer base, then obviously the actual service needs to be top notch as nothing has a better ROI in marketing than word of mouth... it's free and carries it's weight in gold.
But to go alongside this excellent service you need a name that 'sounds' like excellence also... and the majority of 'high-end' profitable hair salons are named after the individuals running them 'Paul Mitchell', 'Toni & Guy', 'Marc Young' for e.g. Hairdressing is a craft and an 'art' somewhat so should be portrayed as such, so I would simply stick with your mrs's name followed by 'hairdressing' soo... Joe Bloggs Hairdressing.
Look at the way people act these days... champagne lifestyles, flash cars ( ), holidays... most local businesses I have seen in the past 5-6 years that have had great success all play off of this:
For e.g. A local nail and cosmetics parlour is absolutely booming, purely because they know their target demographic well, they know their customers are young 18-20 somethings who all want 'only way is essex' fake tan, eyelashes and boobs looks. So this business does something very smart and caters to their wants by offering something as simple as a CHEAP LIDL BRAND (customers dont know this) glass of champagne with each booking... it gives the representation of an upper class experience without actually doing anything or investing heavily in anything.
It's rammed on a Friday night with girls getting their hair and nails done before a 'big night out' pretending to life the high life with a glass of bubbly... We know it's all superficial but thats life.
Anyway sorry for the massive RANT. But your post got me thinking... Best of luck with the business
