N52B30 Disa Failure

Afternoon all,

I thought I'd post this up for interest, as there seems to be a lot of noise about the M54 DISA issues, but relatively little on the N52.

So to give some background - over the last couple of weeks my coupe had become noticeably rattlier on cold start up. I finally managed to get it plugged into diagnostics and it threw up a load of codes relating to Disa No. 1.

Unfortunately I mistook Disa1 as the inner one, rather than the outer; so I purchased a replacement from BMW (at nearly £300 :dizzy: ), along with a complete set of manifold seals and fixings just in case.

The long and short of this is that on Saturday after removing the outer disa, as part of gaining access to remove the inner one, whereupon I discovered the outer disa flap could spin freely and without resistance on the spindle. It's absolutely buggered  the good thing is the spindle is fully retained so there's no way it could fall into the inlet like on the M54 design. That's about the only good thing

So at some point next week I'll be returning the new inner disa I don't need, and getting hold of the disa 2 to replace it next weekend!

So yeah - n52 owners - it does happen, and could be why your car sounds rattly when cold. It's an extremely easy thing to check too
