N52 Water pump

looking for a new water pump (+thermostat) for my e86 coupe.

The pierburg seems the one to go for. Ive seen prices as high as £550 at a well known parts company but eBay have a pierburg pump plus a mahle thermostat for £270.

Are there any better offers around that you know of...

And curious to hear of the pumps that are selling for £100. Any first hand experience of these?
 
Try autodoc.co.uk (use their mobile app), much more reasonable prices than UK websites/stores. I have used them a few times and saved a fair bit of money and had no issues.

edit: I misread your post. Pierburg pump + thermostat for £270 seems pretty good to me.

Yeah, I've looked around and it does look a good price... always on the look out though to see if I've missed something...

I found a technical data sheet on the lower priced pumps and it doesn't read well if your in the market for one... still like to hear real world stories though.
 
Bought mine from atp-spareparts on ebay last summer £275 for peirburg pump and Behr thermostat
 
Well we know for a fact that the Pierburg pumps are not very reliable so I would be tempted to take a punt on the £100 Ebay jobs if it were me!
 
I don't think they are that unreliable, even if my 1st E86 needed one after 60K miles and 9 years. I've replaced mechanical water pumps sooner than that in the past.

Sadly my E91 325i needed a new one at 135K, but that may have been its 2nd.

A Pierburg pump and a stat for £270 looks like a good deal - BMW charge over £500 for just the pump!

Let me give you some advice. Make sure to spin the water pump by hand before installing! I didn't do this and had to drain the coolant and remove again to get it to work. Should have read up on it more I guess, wasn't in the instructions but saw tons of people saying to. Tricky to get all the hoses on if not done in the right order. Put the U hose on the thermostat and water pump before installing, then the radiator hose, and finally slip it on the very short rubber hose above the water pump. Any other order and it's near impossible. All hardware is one time use so make sure it comes with bolts. If you haven't bled the system before its automatic, make sure to read how to do that.

Also just go ahead and do both now, save yourself some pain.
 
Now my pump,thermostat and expansion tank have been replaced and the car is back to running great. I have a question...

What interests me now (a bit late) has anyone had a look at the electrics on the pump to see if there is a viable refurb option on these units?

I can't find any mention of this, but I can't be the first to ask....
