N52 sump gasket change

Hi been getting some oil drops on to the drive just recently. On investigation it looks like its coming from the sump gasket.
Has any one got any tips on changing the gasket, my biggest concern is what to use to support the engine when I lower the cross member.
Everything else looks straight forward
I would use get gasket and new bolts of course.
Thanks In advance

I'd want to be absolutely sure it was the sump gasket first. Most oil leaks on N52s are from the cam-cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket (my 3 Series has had both)!

And a couple of members on here have had leaks from corroded sump pans.

But if you do need to remove the sump you'd need to support the engine from the top - google "engine support bar".

Anyway good luck getting your leak fixed.

I had the leaky sump on my 3.0si, didn't fancy dropping the sub frame on the drive so sent it in. It was actually a cheap repair at @ 180 quid.. One thing to note was when it came back the steering wheel was slightly off centre so had to go back to be realigned.. Apparently its easily knocked out of place during this job so worth considering

Would be worth checking cam cover and filter housing gaskets as Mr Tidy has suggested. As a sufferer of a corroded sump pan this is also worth investigating, they are made from very thin steel so there's a good chance it could be this.

Hi and thanks for all the replies. I can see how the engine support beam works now, i thought they were only for transverse engines.
If its only around £200 to do i will let my local indie TWG have a look at it.
I do like to do these sort of things myself though.

Hi Rich, I'm sure Will at TWG would do a good job.

Depending on where you are exactly Ross at RBM Hampshire in Hook would be a good alternative as Will seems very busy at the moment.

The aluminium screws are single use only, about £40 a set if I remember correctly, so I'd get a set while you're at it.

Mine is going in for exactly this next month. Will at TWG said circa 300, Ross at RBM was similar at about 350.

Bit too much agro to do on my drive, plus I'd need to buy a beam to support the lump.

I did all the other leaky work last year. Will had a look at sump previously and said to keep an eye on it, about 3 weeks later it was back after they cleaned up the area and as Insp I was due he said book it all in and they will investigate again and we can decide.

TWG have a 5-6 week lead time at the mo.
