N52 slight misfire, opinions...

Hi all,

I've put this in the E85 section but it's a generic N52 engine question so hopefully other see it.

I keep getting a very slight stutter occasionally as if one cylinder misfires just once, usually under light acceleration at modest revs. No errors logged, of course. If I can find an hour later or this weekend, I need to start by looking at coils and plugs. Two questions:

1) Anyone know of any tell tale signs they've seen in a similar circumstance?

2) Is there anything else in the N52 that might cause this? Sign the O2 sensors are on the way out? Sticky VANOS solenoid (I replaced one a couple of years ago that was causing proper poor running complete with errors and cleaned the other)? Something convoluted involving the valvetronic?

I actually feel somewhat stupid asking this - I'm an engineer of many colours and, though I feel nothing more than a tinkerer, I have barely ever paid a garage to do anything car related in 30 years - but I keep worrying it's something more complicated than a loose plug and I can't think of a definite way of eliminating the coils (unless the secondary of one has actually gone open circuit) and loathe the ideal of replacing them willy nilly.

No codes, if you have a scanner that can show live data with engine running that may reveal something, if your scanner can look at misfire counters it might show if one coil pack is on the way out. How old are the spark plugs and what mileage is on the car?

I think you need a certain number of consecutive miss-fires before it will log a code. As said, live data readout may help.

Plugs went in last year at 100k, about 10k ago. Probably NGK.

I do have a cheapy scanner that does live data; I'd not thought of that as I keep it for other cars really. It's on loan at the mo so I'll try that if I don't find anything.

Thinking about it, they've become a bit more common so I might be able to juggle INPA while trying to set it off - there's a handy road near me that's closed at the mo.

Another thought that hit me after I posted - I have access to a set of E90 coils. A neighbour has a bent 320i mouldering away and he owes me a favour!

I had similar issues on my old 325i with the 2.5 N52. Turns out the ignition coils were on their way out. If you have more than, say, 80k miles on the clock and your coils are still original then that might be the issue.

You can get a full set of OE Delphi coils off Amazon for £120 for all 6. Easy job to do yourself too.

Well, pulled plugs and coils this morning, all looked fine. Went and borrowed a coil so that I could switch it up the cylinders over the next few days and find the dodgy one....

Swapped the temp one for cyl 1, went for a spin and all was good. 1 in 6 chance of finding the duffer first time I suppose. Pulled over, swapped back to the original... And.... it carried on running fine.

Grrr.

So, for the moment, I'm going to assume a mildly dodgy connection that is now good.

(Boring extra, should anyone care. Mine is a 2006 (April ish) and the donor car is also an 06 plate but it turns out there was a coil change between the two. They changed the keying on the 3 pin connectors (and thus the loom) so they don't directly swap. However the key can be cut away as they are otherwise completely interchangeable.)

I have a very similar problem.
I moved coil packs around, however the problem still existed, so I kind of ruled that out, however at one point I did get a Cylinder 1 misfire. I'm still tempted to buy new packs just to rule them out.
I have also heard to could be a dirty MAF sensor. I've tried cleaning it. But problem still exists. They are about £100+ for a new one.
I have heard it could be a vacuum leak somewhere cause by a cracked pipe. It's only on certain occasions that the pipe slight opens and causes the fluttering. Have heard people say to change out the CCV/PCV pipes. They arent the most expensive, but just a faff to do as you need to take the manifold off.
Do you find the revs slightly fluctuate at idle? That happens more than the hesitation you mention.
