This will add to B21’s assessment that the 3.0 was a star turn but the latest issue of the BMWCCGB magazine has a feature on the N52 saying it was one of BMWs greats and should sit alongside the S54 etc. Not for its power per se (although that is respectable enough) but because it was a bloody good engine that powered a whole range of BMWs in the noughties. And of course we know that already don’t we! But again nice to see the recognition.

It also had that unique magnesium alloy block that made it pretty light for it's size. I was amazed by how good it was when I got my first E86, so much so that I had another in an E86, and when looking for a daily I had two more in a 325i and my current 330i. The only downside in the 3 Series is you can barely hear it.
