N52 Exhaust Mid Section

Hello all

I've been combing through too many websites trying to find some information on the N52 setups mid section.

I was pretty convinced that this area would be chambered between both banks of exhausts to aid the scavenge cycle but I'm finding reports that actually they remain separate within the mid pipe and effectively what we see on the attached image is simply a single piece item in looks only.

Has anyone cut one open or replaced as described above?

I'm after a simple bolt on replacement for this unit which I've identified already - it's a single chamber with twin inlet and outlet affair which should aid scavenging if none is currently possible. Whether it will do anything beneficial mind is doubtful but I like to tinker.

Equally, I'd be interested In knowing if anyone has just gone for an X pipe or the like?

I really don't want to drop the backbox as Ive driven an M54 with the delete and hated the drone... The mid section seemed as good a place as any to make a minor change.

I chopped out my mid-box and replaced with straight pipes years ago when I had my old 3.0si coupe. In my opinion it was the perfect compromise for a bit more noise and pops/burbles without being droney. Made it perfect for dailying, you couldn't notice it unless giving it the beans.

When I chopped the box out, I did look down the pipes -they are perforated for a bit of sound-reduction into the packing, but you are correct that the two pipes are entirely separate straight runs through the box.
 
Would a supersprint midpipe fit the OEM system?

Thanks Ed. Currently speaking with a local Powerflow supplier about getting the work done.
 
Also had mine cut and straight pipe welded on, just over an hours work for a decent welder, Mike at the zed shed did mine

I presume we are talking about the bit in red, what about the green section, what does that consist of inside?
 
No idea, but it'll be the red bit I'm removing.

I intend to make it interchangeable so we shall see what happens. Will be a few weeks before I can get in though.

You may struggle with making it interchangeable due to the bend being so close to the box on the right hand pipe which is why it usually has to be welded..the piece circled in green does nothing other than support the change of direction in the pipework..so I'm told
 
Yeah, it's quite tight and not much room for an overlap style joint. Might have to just suck it and see.

Price is comparable to a backbox but I really can't be arsed with messing with the rear.

Yes I have a dlv modded backbox
