This actually relates to a UK 130i, although I do quite a lot of work on my friends 06 E85 2.5i Z4. As the N52 is much more common in the Z4 than other BMW models I though I would ask for advice here.
Just had quite a bit of work done to the 130i. Rear wheel bearing, rear brake caliper, Blackine LSD, prop centre bearing and a new LUK DMF and clutch. The garage initially fitted the clutch release bearing carrier in the low position. I have seen a photo of the old one and it was that way. However they felt the clutch bite seemed quite low even after lots of different bleeding methods so to make sure everything had been done right they took it all apart again and fitted it in the high which made no difference. The point is about 15mm of the floor and I think it just needs bedding in more and it drives fine.
However I then looked at the listing for the parts I ordered and LUK say it should be in the low position. I think high is for flywheel conversions and other models. There is conflicting info available if the high position will cause a problem. The stroke of the slave cylinder is the same so I think it has just changed the geometry a little and the arm will angle back a bit. As long as the piston still has free motion and does not bottom out it may well be OK? Someone in the USA Bimmerpost e90 forum fitted it that way and said it was fine on an e90 06 N52. I'm just a bit worried in case there is an slight resting pressure of the release bearing due to the high position which would then load the crankshaft thrust bearing. I had a weird failure on a 1968 Triumph Herald where the spring the clutch master cylinder broke and ground the crankshaft thrust bearing down and into the block!
Anyone out there know for sure about this at all? My gut feeling is ask them to put it back to OE and what LUK recommend just in case. They tried the other way in good faith and it would have taken them quite a long time, but I want to keep this 85K mile car for many years to come so want everything to right.
