When you think about it why wouldn’t they last as long if not longer than preceding models?
Given the design guys have all the accumulated experience of the preceding models, later technologies etc they should last longer providing the design compromises associated with emissions / economy don’t get in the way...
The N20 engine powered several 18i 20i 28i models 2,3,4,5, Z, X1, X3, X4..several of those are at 100k+ miles..
Most of these engines provided they get regular oil changes of good quality will run for ever..
Most of their lives they are running in the sweet spot of life expectancy..1,500 - 3,500 rpm..
Stop start / short journeys kill all car engines and they were one of the first to suffer the curse of stopstart..some observers think most of the cam chain related issues are a combo of inadequate oil changes and stop start..
I think the next question the doomsayers will ask will be yes ‘ but what if you tune the b@ll&cks of it?’
