as for the newer 4 pot compared against its 6 cylinder equivalent, don't the cars weigh about the same and the distribution of it pretty similar too.

Dunno, but I've owned both and I can tell you that the 4 pots turns in much sharper, fact!! :P

Agreed, the 4 pot lump is less weighty and set further back helping centre of gravity, it was the same with the Z3 with the 4cyl being slightly sharper to drive.

I don't get why people keep banging on that 6cyls are better. When I drove the 2.3 I didn't think wow I must have this over the 4 cyl. The turbocharged 4 seems to perform better to me and more torquey :)

If I had to have a 6cyl I guess it would be the 35i but then I don't want the running costs.

Tim.

One thing I will say though, it's great to have hydraulic assisted steering again, I think steering feel was the main criticism with my zed, that and the standard stereo

Well I haven't been getting the mpg I anticipated, if anything it's getting worse, I expected an improvement once the engine ran in. Daily drive to work is about 1 mile urban and 7 extra urban. I was getting about 32 initially which dropped to 30 so decided to experiment with vpower but now dropped to 28. By contrast I'm getting better mpg out of the 202k Volvo shed which I drive my dogs round in, which is twelve years old and has a manufacturers figure of 41.

Interesting is that the z4M is ment officially to average under 24mpg. But I am getting on a run 30mpg average hood down. If I go for it of course it drops drastically but the worst I have seen with some twity roAd blasting is 23mpg. I am hoping that my on order M135i auto will be able to do nearer 40mpg average (when I an not blasting it of course!)

I was expecting something more in line with Honest Johns real world mpg. Surprised the 28 comes out better than my 20 though

Something I find curious with these threads, do people really monitor their MPG that closely and why? and why from other threads I've seen in the past do peeps get hung up and upset as their motor doesn't do anywhere near the claimed manufacturers figs which are rarely attainable and marketing hype. I could understand if you were seriously not reaching average figs as theyre could be a problem but it tickles me somewhat :)

+1 why worry

If fuel consumption was a consideration factor when selecting a car then I'm afraid the zed wouldn't be on the radar!

Don't worry about 5mpg when depreciation costs are what they are and if you buy on a finance deal the add another 5%

Do the arithmetic and you will soon stop worrying about a few mpg!

I'm not bothered about the cost, just surprised that it's so low for mainly extra urban driving. On the link I posted, the reported ranges are between 28.4 and 38.1 mpg. Also seems odd that a modern, new engine is being outperformed by a knackered 12 year old one.

It depends on how and where you drive. It's possible to get high 30s even low 40s on the motorway with cruise control. I even got my range computer to say 447miles when I filled up last week which means I was averaging 40.6mpg just before I filled up.

Look at it another way, a 245bhp engine in a 1500kgs car that can accelerate from 0-62 in 5.6second and hit 155mph (limited), is also capable of averaging 40mpg on the motorway at a steady 70mph. Now that's a special bit of engineering.

Does anyone think that using the sport button has an effect on fuel consumption or is it just my perception that it is ?

If you can afford the 35i I would certainly recommend going for that, 6 cylinders is always better than 4

Bigger is always better eh sars?

......there's nothing wrong with the 4 pot much lighter and more agile.
I'd rather have the 20i over the 23i and the 28i over the 30i, but the 35i is a beaut!!
Much lighter? Really? 28i manual base curb weight 1400kg. 30i manual base curb weight 1415kg. These are euro spec 2011 models. US spec are around 50 kilos more.

That is exactly what made me go for the 28i, however I do have an nagging voice saying 35i, 35i 35i! but my current 335i I do not use its power - so Iam I going to miss the 1 sec difference to 60 or 40-70. Doubt it - will i appreciate the £150 month saving - yes i will.

Its like a big hammer in the tool box - a waste of money-- but invaluable and nice to use when you need it just once in a while :)
