N20 28i MPG What you getting - as very confused.

Hi,

I am just about to place my order, but more goggling making me question is it the right move?

I currently drive an 335i, and averaging 24MPG - so around 77% of official figures - but the N20 28I official figures are 41 Mpg but looking at fuelly and and other forums looks like i be looky to get 24? As I would be expecting getting 28-31 MPG.

I thought the N20 was an fuel efficient?

And there is no benefit in the 28i - might as well get the 35i

Any thoughts appreciated.

Fifth gear recently ran a story about this where there's about a 20% difference in published / claimed MPG vs actual MPG

First thing I google is 'real mpg' for any car I'm after...

You'll get late 20's early 30's average.

If you can afford the 35i I would certainly recommend going for that, 6 cylinders is always better than 4

Lots of factors to take in, how it's driven, when it driven ie heavy or light traffic, motorway driving or city. Wheels and tyres and the pressure. Also are you looking to buy a manual or auto box?

The 6 cylinder was my choice after having a E88 120i auto which I was lucky to get 27mpg from but get 33/34mpg from my 35is.

I get around 33mpg from my 28i in a 'normal' mix of town/country driving.

I did a trip out to Norfolk last weekend and got close to 40mpg overall.

Well, mine's not done too many miles yet (3800 now) but I'm getting anywhere from 26 (if driven very aggressively) to happily averaging 32 around town (driven carefully) to 42 on cruise control at 86 mph to over 50 on cruise at 60 mph, on nice empty euro motorways.

......there's nothing wrong with the 4 pot much lighter and more agile.
I'd rather have the 20i over the 23i and the 28i over the 30i, but the 35i is a beaut!!

LOL my wife's Mazda CX5: Mazda quote 62mpg combined. We get 45 mpg on a run not exceeding 70 mph and 35 mpg around town

I'm looking for a 28i auto and was hoping for low 30s I had a E86 3.0 si and averaged about 27 mpg...........

It worth doing the sums between say 30mpg and 40mpg over your proposed annual mileage - then compare it to the depreciation!

Something I find curious with these threads, do people really monitor their MPG that closely and why? and why from other threads I've seen in the past do peeps get hung up and upset as their motor doesn't do anywhere near the claimed manufacturers figs which are rarely attainable and marketing hype. I could understand if you were seriously not reaching average figs as theyre could be a problem but it tickles me somewhat

I guess if you have experienced it a few times and understand it's all marketing hype then that's fine. Speaking for myself, it's part of the "justification" process for the completely emotional decision to buy myself a nice new motor

You seem to have contradicted yourself!

You ask why do people monitor mpg then explain why they do!

Spoke too soon, averaging 23 over about 100 miles today! Bit surprised how much a bit more welly can drastically alter average. Oh well, at least I know better economy is achievable

Bigger is not always best oke:

as for the newer 4 pot compared against its 6 cylinder equivalent, don't the cars weigh about the same and the distribution of it pretty similar too.
