Mystery switch/sensor in tailgate

Ok, after swapping my third brake light for a clear one i was in the process of putting the two plastic covers back on the tailgate when i noticed in the tailgate there is a switch or sensor just dangling there in the loom near the lock barrel under the cover on the right hand side (uk drivers side) now i used to pride yself in knowing what most things were on a car but this has me scratching my head!

I know i probably being a bit thick, but does any one know what its for and if it should actually be attached to something?

on second viewing it looks like it might supposed to be stuck on the lock barrel mechanism but i've still no idea what its purpose is. Any ideas?

sorry no photo as of yet as i need to set up a hosting account but i took another look at this and it appears to be a micro switch that sits on the lock barrel. I assume its to turn the alarm off when you manually open the boot with the key. (Mine goes off when i do this) Would have expected it to properly clip on though, mines just stuck on with some sticky icky stuff, surely it didn't leave the factory like that.
