Mystery divots !!

Each morning mystery divots appear in our back lawn - they're two or three inches across and about the same depth tapering to a point. I spend ages pressing the dislodged turfs back in the holes - bloody annoying !

Clearly something that is getting worms - but what is it ? had a few suggestions :

Badger?- too big in my opinion - would make bigger holes and more mess
Fox? - possible but would expect again bigger holes
Green Woodpecker? - few of them about but do they do this sort of damage

Tony Jacklyn - practicing for a comeback ? ( not sure if he's still alive or living on the IOW )

What do you think ? How to deter them ?

Agree but what a sad bastard I would look out there with a digital camera photographing a hole ( behave !! )

Could be a squirrel ( had a few in our garden over the years - red ones down here )

You need to hire these guys :

I had the same mystery holes, was doing my nut in as could never catch what was doing it... Then one morning as I was starting my car to go to work a bloody squirrel was sat on the top of the side gate watching me!! I swear the crafty bugger was waiting for my car to start before he knew the coast was clear, I swear he was!!

I put some sticks in the ground and he never seemed to dig it up after that...

I've put a few solar lights dotted around and will leave the conservatory lights on tonight to see if this makes any difference - at least whatever is doing it will see the worms a bit clearer !
