It is a Zaino button: it dispenses a spritz of Z10 leather conditioner in the interior. The fragrance drives women wild.

I thought that was eggnog? :scratchhead:

Well, I guess it goes like this ??

Ok... the plot thickens also found a strange cord in the boot that runs into the DVD compartment and then up the top out of sight. Looking inside the compartment the top of the plastic has been cut away as if to make way for something. There is also a black looking OEM cable not connected to anything.

No idea what the cord is for!? Or what was in that compartment previously? The cut away is sort of square shaped do you think it could have been a Dice?

Check the pictures out anyway!

isn't that cord in the trunk the manual release if the top gets stuck?

Ah.. ok well thanks for that much... I guess I shouldn’t be pulling it then!? It really would pay to read the instruction book! Pah, real men don’t read the instructions! Incidentally, the past two occasions i've tried to remotely lower the roof (from the fob) its put the windows down, unlatched the roof then errored. If I get in the car and hold the button then it goes down just fine. Think it might be connected?

No, the key is just rubbish, it's a well known fact that the roof will stop for no reason whilst using the key, I think it's because the view to the clown nose gets interrupted by the roof itself.

Just looked through the owners handbook... I can't find any reference to this cord! How, when, why should I use it!?
What is the other OEM connector in the picture with the DVD?

The cord for the top is used when for whatever reason (motor fails) to release the top from the down position so that you can put it up manually in case of rain. Hmm but then how do you lock the top in the up position?

perhaps machine guns?? 007 kinda stuff comes to mind. maybe Inspector Gadget.

maybe it's a direct link to previous owner's home to get the oven going so that the food will be ready when he/she gets home

OK time for some answers...
I've been in contact with the original car owner who's a nice guy and a certified car nut with a colourful history of spending huge amounts of money on super cars and racing in general.
So to cut a long story short my car was a Simpson Motorsport 'project' and at one point supercharged to 400BHP!
See http://www.simpsonmotorsport.co.uk/default.asp?id=77&pid=70&name=BMW%20Z4%203.0%20Supercharged&page=Projects
It was also fitted with a sophisticated DL1 GPS data logger interfaced with the NAV on TV to record laps and produce telemetry! This button is the only remainder of the system, specifically it was the lap reset button!

I was initially quite concerned to find all this out im now very happy as the original engine on mine was ran in for 3k then put in a crate. All the mods, supercharging and track days were done on the M3 CSL engine. And in any case... it only saw 4 track days!

The car was put back to standard with the exception of the ESS exhaust system and being 30mm lower on the springs.

So of the 16k that are on the clock - only 4k of them can be attributed to my engine! Result!

Interesting info! So is the car in your link your car then? I'm not sure what I'd think TBH, not too sure about putting such a high power into the std bodyshell. Hmmm.

that or maybe he had a radar or some other device hardwired, and that was the button for on/off/mute, etc.
