Mysterious Metal Clanging Noise :-(

Thanks Strometech - reassuring to finally know that this isnt a big repair bill lurking round the corner

I'm not sure how much it will cost to get the exhaust dropped and propeller shaft pulled to get the grease done...I expect an hour or two labor...dropping the exhaust is not something I would want to tackle myself without a hoist so I'll probably pay the Indy to do it as I find it annoying....a fine roadster should not make clanking noises imho.
Great forum you guys have going...lots of useful info for newbies like me to learn about the z4... :)

i think i know your problem the noise come when in reverse if yes its the grease where the prop meets the dif its gone to dust you need to replace the grease not an easy job had mine done in a garage £120

Which garage was that? i may go there if close enough!! I have heard of this before on another thread and I am sending mine to A1BMW to have some diff bushes replaced but may ask them to try this first as it will save a couple of hundred quid......

I found some more useful information regarding this noise and the BMW fix

Check this site
http://www.shipkiller.com/

Click on the Service and Information Bulletins
Check the 18th bulletin labelled "Differential Input Flange mating surface with the input flange is insufficiently greased"

While you are there check out the other SIB's....some good reading there

Cheers... :D

An hour or two isnt all bad. I'm producing a list of things to get done next time the car is serviced, this will be on the list amongst others....

Stromtech, good find. I have the Z booked in Tuesday for this issue so i will print and present this to them!

I will post hopefully Tuesday night and let everyone know how it went......

I have done a few of these now on various bmws. The input shaft on the differential req's lubricating with a specific bmw grease. The input is dry hence the cracking/metal noise.

Thanks Bowser1234, I presume a BMW indy garage will know which grease to use on that particular part?

The SIB on the shipkiller web site indicates BMW Lubricant P/N 83 23 0 443 864

I suggest printing the SIB and taking it to the Indy...maybe you will get a discount for doing part of his job...

I bloody well hope so!! I may even try the old "I'm on a forum and lots of people have this problem so give me a fat discount and maybe I'll pass the word on..........."

UPDATE

My local Indy has the car for the repair suggested in the Shipkiller website. I printed the SIB and he seemed impressed that I'd found it so I of course took full credit

Problem is thats not the only problem!!! 3 Of the 5 diff bushes are split and completely f@cked so need replacing and there is a leak from the diff at the input shaft so I have 3 bushes, new seal parts to buy!!! Good news is that the whole job is only £295 labour which seems good value compared to the £800 some other local tried to screw me out of!!

I will let you know the outcome on Friday as they have it until then. Problem being that I wont know whether the noise was being caused by the SIB issue or the knackered bushes.........

LOL...Full credit for being wrong :P

Let's hope they get it fixed witht he bushings and seal...this is good info to have as it does show there is more than one cause for the noise. I wonder if the labour cost would be much different in either case.

Hope this sorts it for you.. :D

Cheers, my wife called me an idiot when she dropped me off with my sheet of paper this morning, when I told her the extra work needed she called me a smarmy twat. She's locked under the stairs now.

I'm gonna have a chat with the guys when I get the car back Thursday night. I will ask what the labour cost would have been without the bush replacement and input shaft seal!!! I suppose that if the noise is cured, and other sufferers know that IF their bushes are fine then the SIB fix is clearly the answer. If not they will have to dig deep like me but hopefully this will be the end of it at last with about £500 out of pocket.....

LOL...Have not heard the expression 'smarmy twat' in a long time. Women just don't understand. Once in a while we males do get it right and our investgative powers actually do save money. But for the most part I am considered 'wrong' until proven otherwise.

Once you get it sorted your information could make one of the rest of us look like a hero.

I will be sure to post a full write up after a good chat with the garage owner and hopefully the mechanic that worked on it. I hope to get a breakdown of part numbers and labour costs attributed to each of the different jobs. There is also a chance that he'll say give me my £500 and f&ck off but i hope not!!!

I'm not even considering the possibility of this work not fixing the issue............ :dizzy:

UPDATE

Noise fix was indeed the SIB that was kindly linked to on here, I have done 30 miles in the Z now trying to get a noise but nothing. I cannot tell you how HAPPY this makes me. Mentally, it feels like a new car because I had got sooo used to the clunky noise it lowered my opinion of the car as a whole a bit.

I must point out that while the car was in, the garage spotted that I had the main diff bush and 2 subframe bushes shot to pieces so they had to replace them. There was also a leak from the diff at the input shaft. This was sorted also.

The garage cannot tell me whether the grease fix solved the knocking or not as they can only presume there was some movement of the diff due to the knackered bushes. I would suggest that if you have this knocking that you get a garage to check the bushes before you book in for the work. If they say the bushes are fine then it must be the grease issue which is VERY cheap for what it does. If they say the bushes are gone as well you need to make a decision about it but I think it's overall good value even if you have it all done.
