my zed under repair

A mate of mine recently wrote off his Citroen C3 (no great loss...) whilst twice the DD limit, no other cars involved (he basically took a roundabout too fast & ploughed straight on) and his insurance paid out with no queries whatsoever...

Generally AFAIK in instances where the driver is unfit through drink or drugs, the Ins Co will limit their liability to the statutory minimum i.e. 2rd party only.

I think his insurance is paying out as he is in the US.... and the insurance companies there treat drunk driving differently.

Caveat - What I’m about to say does not mean that I condone drunk driving!!!

In the UK over the course of the last 20-30yrs they have managed to make drink driving taboo. The general public now considers drunk driver to be scum of the earth. The insurance policies reflect these attitudes.

In allot of Europe and the US and certainly in the developing world drink driving is something that is sometimes illegal... but not taboo. There have been no television/political campaigns to try and villainies drunk drivers and so people that do it are not considered to be worse than murderers. The insurance policies in these countries reflect this attitude.

Its 1 of those things that gets people to lynch mob up in this country now, however, using a mobile phone while driving is still something you see often....

With the same caveat, this point is illustrated in that we no longer refer to drink driving, but always drunk driving. I suspect this is part of the attaempt to change social attitudes but it may be counter-productive if people think 'I've had 3 pints, I'm not drunk, so I must be ok to drive' which is neither legal or sensible.

At the risk of going slightly off topic, did you know that if you're driving very early in the morning (@ 4 - 6am), your reactions will slower than someone over the DD limit? Something to beware of.

Grateful to lacroupade for recounting his wife's chilling experience. All the best to her. And to OP for making us think about it

mystik, glad no-one was hurt. I'd better leave it at that.

lacroupade, :( Christ, that's simply awful. Glad she wasn't physically hurt, but for her having done nothing wrong that's a lot to carry around. Completely understand your sentiments toward the drunk guy. Hope your wife's not haunted by it every time she goes out at night. Horrible.

Back to the OP's case... it took some courage posting, at the same time I'm impressed with the restrained condemnation from all and even advice on how not to further land yourself in trouble with clips on YouTube

I'm amazed, the guy selling the 2.2 as the "best Z4 in the UK" got more grief than this OP :|

UAE - any alcohol in you body whilst driving - 3 months in the slammer (and thats not a nice place to be.....). MYSTIK, sorry to her of your crash, it's a brave man that can openly admit their error in such an open 'forum' - hope the end result in terms of ban/fine/car damage is not too bad for you.

Thats a bugger considering your body has a natural amount of alcohol present in the blood (afaik) :D
