300 pounds per month for just driving a car, hmm... Is financing a car a very common thing in the UK?
I will only finance a house, the rest should be paid for.
IMHO very wise decision!

You have to remember the BMW Select deals on the Z4 were very competitive with very generous dealer contributions 2 years ago which made the deals very tempting and preferable to buying with ones own cash in full.

True, but people want 30K cars, when they don't have 30K, so they borrow it/PCP it. Its normal here (though I've not done it myself).

There is but car companies wouldn't exist if it wasn't for people financing cars be it by finance by the car company or by taking a bank loan etc. They wouldn't sell the amount of cars they do and things would be very different.

Even for some people even a 'cheaper' car isn't affordable to pay in cash. Finance is the reason why people have so much 'stuff' in today's world.

As for the whole 1 series thing, it already been advised that this is the other half getting this car with their own money and it's helping with the termination of the agreement on the Z4.

Yes, that's true, it's just the same in Holland, although I think car financing is not such a common thing here as in the UK and the US.
I'm not sure if it's always a good thing though, but that's just mine opinion.

If it wasn't for finance, I wouldn't have half the stuff I've got....and I also wouldn't be in such a bad financial state!

I totally agree with the sentiment that you should save up for things and then pay with cash.....I agree with it, but don't do it!

Not at the 50% mark yet, so can't just hand it back...but even if I could, I'd then be losing the equity. At least this way, we are getting that (in a way).

As said, the replacement 1'er is for Deb (I don't think she'll take on the Picasso!). Deb had breast cancer in 2010 and bought herself a BMW as a present to herself for beating cancer - yes, other, cheaper, just as capable cars are available (I'm actually impressed with value for money of Kia!) but she wants a BMW.

I will benefit plenty from it - no finance for me, and I'll get to drive the new one sometimes.

People should just accept that you have made a decision and in doing so you are also kindly assisting your other half to get a new car they have been after. You both get what you want for now and people should accept that instead of not reading your posts fully and suggesting cars which has not been asked for.

Good on you for doing this and I'm sure everything will work out in the end

my moto is if I earn the money I spend it but don't have finance I am one of the lucky ones that have endless amount of overtime .but I am cutting back on the hrs now as getting a bit to old to do 80 hrs a week.back to 45 50 hrs that's plenty now

Yes it may give you different options if you decide the Picasso is in need of a upgrade but I'm sure you wouldn't suggest to your good lady who's clearly loving the 1 series hence looking for a new one to go for something which isn't as good inside as she would like.

It's so hard parting with a car you love when your replacing it with something else but when it's being sold with no replacement it will leave a massive hole. I suppose this is your therapy to talk through it and come to terms with it all as it seems to have been a very quick turn around

There was nothing wrong in suggesting other motors which are potentially cheaper to buy and run, afterall the OP is doing what hes doing for financial reasons so I'm sure Kevin is receptive to all suggestions and ideas. Some people when times become tough just like to share lifes experience.

No arguments guys - I'm just sharing my pain to talk it over.

As I commented before - I'm quite impressed with Kia - a work colleague has a Sportage as a lease car and the standard spec list puts BMW to shame! I also like the look of the c'eed (never driven one though, so can't comment totally).

In reality, had I done the sensible thing originally, I'd never have got a Z4...or even a BMW - but I like to dabble in "man maths" and after a session on the man maths calculator I thought I could afford it!

The Citroen is brilliant for work - big and old, so I don't need to be precious about it.

Its good to hear all comments - my mind is made up on this option, but who knows whats around the corner!

Yes but he's not getting rid of his Z for a 1 series. He's getting rid of it because he can't afford it. His other half is buying the other car, just so happens that's had to be mentioned as by using this as a part ex to ensure a 'quick' termination of his current deal. He's now had to explain further why his other half had the car she has and he doesn't have to.

I just don't understand why people feel they need to make these suggestions to someone who's clearly stated the car is their other halfs. It was me in his position, I wouldn't be telling my partner who can afford their car to buy something cheaper that they don't want.

As I've said good luck to Kevin and I'm sure once he's back where he needs and wants to be financially he will be looking at a new weekend toy

Hi

Sorry to hear your zed has to go....but if you need to liberate your finances then you are doing the right thing. Sadly in my line of work I see this all too often.

I too have had to make the same decision a few years back while going through a divorce. Do you need to buy new? I only ever buy 6 or 7 yr old bmws now and they don't cost me that much to run.
