My Z4 failed it’s last MOT

As some of you know I’m selling my Z4, I took advice from here and sold of a lot of my mods and made a good amount of money, so I then took it’s for a MOT today before I put car up for sale on here but unfortunately the emissions failed and it needs a new cat put in which they wanted £600-700.
Could it still be worth trying to selling as I was hoping for 5k, but reduce it down to say 4K?
I REALLY don’t want to spend anymore money on the car and just want it gone to a new home.

Thanks
JE

Could be a lot of things, an o2 sensor, plugs, blocked air filter etc. Suggest it needs a good looking at but an obd fault code reader could tell you a lot.

You could also post your HC, CO and lambda readings here for further advice as they can often help narrow down the issue.

Didn’t you get a new sports cat fitted with the vortex exhaust, you can’t have covered many miles since then? It can’t be knackered already :?

Are you just taking their word for that?
I'd be looking at codes first. It could be something simple.
Tbh, if you found the problem and could tell a prospective buyer then you'd have more luck, but there's a lot of nice cars out there for that money with full MOTs. Advertising it as it stands, with the problem you 'think/have been told' it has will get you plenty of feedback I'm sure, but no money in your pocket.

Sometimes sports cats need a good run to get fully up to temp before they can perform well enough to pass emissions testing, i can’t believe it’s finished after a few hundred miles. Take it somewhere else for its test.

Never sell a car without an MOT, unless it's a complete wreck or completely worthless. That's my view anyway.

Sounds convenient, the cat. And a new cat will probably let it pass the MOT, but there must be another underlying reason for the cat failure, if it has failed.

What sort of garage are you taking it to?

Good luck.

Sports cat's can be a bit marginal and need to be properly heated to pass. After cooling off outside the test centre warming at idle may not do the job, a good toasting then roll up on time and in as soon as possible may be the answer. I've seen a massive difference in readings year on year (on my standard cat), mostly depending on it being presented hot.

Yeah I'd be taking that somewhere else, after getting some readings. I've heard a lot of people with sports cats say they need to go for a good drive before dropping their cars off for an MOT, and make sure they test it soonish rather than 7 hours later when it's cooled back down.

Definitely wouldn't sell without, you'll just get loads of people coming round, tutting a lot and telling you it'll cost 3 grand to fix so they can only offer you £1900 for it.

Depends also on the cat. 100 cell cats can be borderline to pass, which is why I always went 200 cell for previous cars I have built/ owned. Its better than the usual standard cats. Also ceramic cats are rubbish and short life and metal cats are much more robust. What kind of cat does it have ?

Gonna take to another garage to see what they say as some have suggested above.
Give it a good hiding on the way there! Get the exhaust ticking nicely and cross your fingers.

Yeah will do thanks dude

Has the car got any engine warning lights on the dash? :?
Rob

Yep you need that sports cat roasting hot to work properly, give it a pasting before you give them the car to do the emissions

I’d consider running some cleaner through it like red ex or even one those Mobile engine kits. Did they give you a print out of emmsions? You can work out how far out it is.
