My Winter Protection Routine (??)

OK, so I am preparing to give my car a bit of TLC over the next few weeks (if the weather relents) to help it out over the winter period.

Here is my proposed running order (ignoring interior and wheels for the time being):

Clean (two bucket method)
Dry (microfibers)
Clay
Clean (TBM)
Dry (microfibers)
Glaze (PoorBoys Black Hole)
Seal (Chemical Guys - Blacklight)

My paintwork is in pretty good condition, very few swirls (Ian, the previous owner took incredible care of her), and as such I hadn't planned to polish prior to glaze/ sealing.

However, should I consider cleansing the paintwork before glazing?

Maybe using something like Dodo Juice Lime Prime? Or will claying and a 2nd clean/ wash suffice to apply the glaze/ sealant??

Thanks in advance for any help guys.

Your poorboys black hole will sufficiently clean the paintwork enough for a wax/sealant to bond

However i would recommend getting a long lasting, durable, salt resistant sealant to apply after blackhole/blacklight combo to see the winter through,

something along the lines of...

http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sealants/finishkare-1000p-hi-temp-sealant/prod_589.html

will last 3 or 4 months if you apply a few layers

no point drying the car before claying - just leave it wet.

personally, I always cleanse the paint before putting on any LSP (unless its a "super sealant" then I wipe down with IPA first.

if you are going to try and layer different types of product, always put the longest lasting one on first and work back the way..

No point trying to bond something that will last months and months onto a product that does last as long.

I don't rate black light in anyway, I think it's s**t... but the Fk1000P is a good shout for winter - bodywork and wheels....

As for my winter prep... I just carry on as normal... I don't change for the seasons...

Thanks for the advice guys, I think i'll get hold of some of the Fk1000p, and a cleanser. Just out of interest Cueball, why didn't you rate Blacklight?

Do I have to use my QD as lubricant for the clay, or would using my shampoo as a lubricant suffice? (I use Dodo Juice Born To Be Mild)? (this will be my first clay attempt, so sorry for the silly questions).

I went the natural route over the synthetic sealants, hoping a DA will make application easier..

I go natural for the summer, but sealants are supposedly harder wearing and offer better protection over a longer period. Hence over winter I've decided to go the synthetic route.

Zymol Royale as of April, naturally

In understand your logic here, in that the product with the shorter life, will also shorten the life of any (supposed) longer life products layered on top.

However, every video/ advice I've seen previously talks about applying a glaze before layering wax/ sealant on top??

all those materials, all that labour for a finish that wont really look or perform any better than a weekly wash and wax and a monthly clay if you want to be fussy.y ou can be blinded and overwhelmed by the plethora of products out there all claiming to be the holy grail of car care. you can park a line of cars up at a show and shine , every one with different systems, techniques ans products used on them and i swear you would be hard pushed to tell the difference.

I can believe you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference, but why not gather than advice/ recommendations of those more experienced in these things than I am.

When you say weekly wash and wax, do you mean a 'wash and wax' shampoo?

there's lots of potential in the world of detailing, a huge amount of difference between a proper paint correction job and a quick wash, but yes - there's lots of money to be wasted on detailing products, i just saved myself £230 by closing cleanyourcar.co.uk in my browser :p

Just prepped both my cars. Poorboys blackhole, poorboys Nattie wax & topped of with armour all shield. Very pleased with armour all shield. Used the wheel stuff & it's great too. Hope it will last over the winter.

A glaze isn't a LSP, so it's ok don't worry about it...

I always glaze under wax.

It only becomes an issue with the 'super sealants' that need bare paint to bond to.

I didn't get on with black light as I just don't get on with most of the CG products... Which is a pain because their UK guy is about 10 mins from my house... They're just not for me.

OK, understood. Thanks for the advice

i meant a weekly 2 bucket wash with a good car shampoo, a clay bar , then a hand wax with a good carnauba based wax or a polymer such as autoglym and buff with good micro fibres.you will only really need to clay 2 or 3 times ayear.

Ah ok, yeh that makes sense. I get so excited about different products. Anything that will take research/ time to do with the Z and I'm hooked
