MY THOUGHTS ON THE Z4

Aye, before the average speed mobile camera kicks in  Will look out for you if I'm heading towards that way

I actually had a nightmare last night where all our cars are electronically tagged and monitored using satellite and average speed worked out every time you start/stopped engine and automatically fined if it ever goes >70mph

where are they planning to stick those buggers then? :(

and can I suggest you ought to take a porn mag to bed with you if you want better dreams?

I'm not sure the 2.0 is 'belaeguered' as it's a car that can hold it's own. Wootz had little problem over a spirited 200 mile run through Wales in his 2.0 up against a bank of 3's and ///M's, so it can hack it with the rest.

Where you gain is insurance, price, maybe servicing and perhaps on fuel. Downside is it's a 4 and sounds like it. It does lack power for that accelerating overtaking pass, but most of all imho is that the larger engines tend to be way better specced not only from the factory, but by wealthy first owners with wheels, lights, trim level, options, etc, but drop in value real quick in the first couple of years and you end up with a way better spec car for not that much more.

Personally I'd always take an older but better engined and specced model knowing it's likley to have been better invested in and less wragged to get performance. What's most important is to get the car for what you want and need based on age (car and driver) price, use, insurance, etc. but having tried out a few different one's to jusdge for yourself what matters.

Well my position was that I wanted something from new, and I'd set myself a couple of targets (i) cheaper insurance (£273 this year), (ii) at least 30mpg (averages 36 in mixed driving, including out and out thrash) and (iii) a reasonable return come resale time....I think the 2.0 ticks those boxes. And as has been said, its more fun squeezing a quart out of a pint pot.

It would be great to have a six-pot motor if I'm honest, but as an everyday drive it had to be reasonable economical, plus I am in no doubt whatsoever that I would end up killing myself in something bigger, and I jest not. I do agree about overtaking though; being a multivalve engine with not a lot of low-down torque you havwe to keep the revs up, but thats half the fun! :D

When I've sorted some 18" wheels and tyres my next thought is a custom s/s exhaust, possibly with an induction kit (if I can find one for the 2.0?), to free up a few more HP....

I drove a 2.0, and without wanting to offend anyone, I did feel that the lack of a 6 pot did take quite a lot away from the experience. The plus side was that it felt slightly more weildy, less ineria etc - but the engine was pretty characterless and didn't seem to 'enjoy' being wrung out.

I can see cost wise that yes, the slightly lower running costs (in particular the insurance) may make it make sense, but in terms of actual driving enjoyment, there wasn't a comparison - I wanted my 3.0Si back ASAP!

LOL no offence taken! Its all horses for courses, its just that us 'lowly' 2.0 drivers feel obliged to stick up for our rides occasionally! :D

My mate's got a 2.0 litre sport and he'd stuck doggedly to my tail even when I was really thrashing the 'M', he only fell away when his brakes overheated on a very twisty stretch -those on the Welsh run will know where I mean -the long and winding road over to Bala :).

Woots also showed the 2.0 litre isn't just 'for the ladies' with a very spirited showing on the Welsh run! The rumour was he could have gone even faster but his wheels were too small :poke:

I would be interested to hear a 2.0 litre with a decent sports exhaust on it.

Yupyup my brakes deffo went a bit spongey just b4 we all got split up on that run..
Hahaha...yes my wheels are s**t
Ive not been able to find an exhaust (or any decent mods) for a 2.0...maybe only custom is the way to do it...so bloody costly tho

Haven't got round to it yet but might be worth checking with Powerflow or someone like that - they charge around £400 for a full replacement, custom made, for a large 4x4, sorry thats the only comparison I can give LOL - but I guess you can also get the twin pipe look at the same time if you want it! 8)
