My roof whimpers! Now with working video

Hi all

In recent weeks the roof on my M has got into the (very) annoying habit of making this whimpering noise, and doing nothing else, when pressing the roof up button after it's been down for a journey. Not what you want when you're in a rush in a car park!

Sorry about the poor video but it captures the sound:

If I undo the red emergency cord in the boot, lift the roof up slightly manually and reinsert the emergency cord, all is good again and the roof works as normal. It's almost as if it needs a prompt.

Has anyone experienced the lovely whimpering before? I wonder if it's some sort of position sensor that's failing or is the roof is low on hydraulic fluid. Car is garaged all the time and has rarely seen rain so I don't think the motor is goosed.

Link just goes to your photobucket pics.
Sounds like the motor needs an overhaul. There are several members here who can service it, top up the fluid and relocate it to the boot for peace of mind.

Strange. I'll try and get the video working later.

Thanks for the advice. I thought that be the answer :(

Yup, the motor will be sitting in a bath of water. Not a problem though and something I can fix for you in about an hour, relocating the pump assembly at the same time, so it'll never get wet again. Whereabouts are you?

...Essex.
Out of my patch and a fair trek for you Mike !
I cant' remember who but there's somebody over that way that does them.

Yes please, a local would be fantastic!

The car barely gets wet apart from when it's being washed. The roof does still work, it just has issues remembering when it needs to go up again

I've now uploaded to YouTube as Photobucket wouldn't work for some reason.

The whimper noise comes from the middle of the hood, rather than from the motor on the left side. This makes me unsure that it's the actual motor that's at fault.
