My regulator's gone

11.96V engine running at idle, 1000, ~2500 rpm.

Ordered a pattern one from that guy in Latvia selling them, has 100% feedback on about 100,000 transactions. We shall see.

Anyone else fixed theirs in a similar way? How long did the alternator last after replacing regulator?

I have replaced the regulator and have a genuine bosch one available which has only done 14k miles if you want it. Turned out the problem was not the regulator but a junction box on the bulkhead where all the big red cables connect. Car went in for a service and they spotted it glowing red and melted. They wouldn't let me have the car till it was fixed.

Does yours sound lazy like a flat battery when you try to start it? That was the symptom I had.

Yeah it went flat on me while driving (only locally thankfully and I limped it home), voltmeter test confirmed no voltage getting to the battery. I'll have a look for the red strap junction, may be the same fault as you had. I'll keep you posted, might be interested in the regulator but don't hold it on my account as I'm a bit flaky at this sort of thing. I need an F00M 145 280 or equivalent. Any idea what you'd want for it in case I revisit this and it's still available?

Cheers,

Grant

You want to get it sorted ASAP. Aside from the hassle of bump starting etc.there's a lot of electrical energy got to go somewhere. If not to the battery then heating cables....

PM if you want the regulator. I paid £60 for it but I don't want that much.

Well the pattern regulator turned up from Latvia within 4 working days, was a Mobiletron pattern jobby actually made in the UK. Fit and finish was excellent for a pattern, went straight on. I thought my brushes were in good nick until I saw the length of the new ones! Fitted it in about 15 mins from tools up to tools down and immediately had 13.9 V across the battery at idle. Job jobbed. I don't think I need a spare now as it's so convincingly fixed now, thanks for the offer however.

That's great news, I'm pleased you got it sorted. Electrical problems can be a pretty expensive and difficult to resolve so always nice to draw a line under them with it costing an arm and a leg!
