My on board computer doesn't tell the truth

I pretty habitually hit --- on every tank in my 3.0si and typically count on having at least 20 miles left at that point. Oddly when I first got the car it would hit --- consistently at 13.0 gallons from full and then slowly crept up to about 13.5 where it has been for the last 6 months / 10K miles. Since the tank holds about 14.5 gallons and I almost never get less than about 27 mpg going 20 after --- seems safe enough. In fairness, I must admit that playing this game did leave me high and dry once in the year and 20K miles I've had the Z. On that occasion though, I was trying to stretch the tank about 30 miles past the --- to get to my favorite gas station and the last couple of miles were up a steep incline, so I suspect the little remaining gas sloshed to the back of the tank where the fuel pump couldn't get at it. After that I've limited myself to 20 and haven't gotten into trouble since.

It indicated I had 14miles worth of fuel left in the car. The engine however didn't agree with this and promptly spluttered to a halt on a busy A road in Monday morning rush hour traffic, boy did I feel a plonker

I would have thought the OBC would have been on the pessimistic rather than optimistic side of things?
Yeah, I had the same experience... Said I could do 14 km. Thought I could make it, because the nearest petrol station was 'only' 4 km. Pretty far when you have to walk... believe me...
