My new Z4, importing to Norway

Hi all,
It is with great enjoyment that I have read many posts on this website over the last few weeks.
I have owned my Z4 (2007, 2,5i) for 2 weeks now, but have yet to see and drive it. I am working in Brazil at the moment, but I move back to Norway in 2 weeks. On my way home I will stop in Germany, pick up my new car and import it to Norway. This importation will be a truly bittersweet moment, because the taxes for importing this car to Norway is more than what I actually paid for the car at the dealer. But that is the way it is in Norway, no way around it.

Now I can't wait to come home and drive my car, I feel like a kid on Christmas eve.

Look forward to learning more about these beautiful cars on this forum!

I do not envy your tax bill...:) Norway is pretty insane, a base Z4 SDrive23i is about £65,000 IIRC...

You are right, Norway is pretty crazy. I will pay more for my 2007 Zed in Norway than I would pay for a completely new 2010 Zed in a neighbouring country (e.g. Sweden). But I love cars in general and Z4's in particular, so I feel it is worth it. :)

welcome to the forum and enjoy the ride home - if not the bill at the end of it

Thanks for the welcome. I am really looking forward to the ride home. It will be my first little road trip. First I get to test the car on straight German highways, then winding roads over the mountains in Norway. :D

and we think in the UK, that we are taxed to death and beyond, £65k, what's that 110% tax!

The tax is difficult to calculate because it is based on several factors. It depends on horsepower, weight of car and CO2 emissions. For my car the tax is around 120%. If you get a 3,0 or an M, the tax will probably be 150-200%. Crazy!

Welcome t the forum, leave it registered in Germany and go back once a year to get it tested. Crazy idea I know, but its a thought

The thought has crossed my mind. Unfortunately, it has also crossed the minds of the police. Therefore it is not allowed to drive a car in Norway that is registered in another country, unless you are only temporarily in Norway. So anyone who lives in Norway will be heavily fined if caught driving a car with foreign license plates, and they will also be forced to pay the tax on the car.
To make matters even worse, the police of course are into the habit of checking foreign cars more often, in order to catch cheaters.

Hi there, Z4_in_Norway and congratulations with your new, sweet ride!

I picked up my 2005 from the BMW dealer in Stavanger in February, but because of the cold weather it has mostly been parked.
I'm situated about 1hour drive south of Bergen, so at least we are both on the Westcoast.
There really arent too many Z4's around here, and I will surly miss driving with the guys from the MX5 club so let me know if you are in the area, we should go for a drive if possible.

Nice car, looks clean as hell!

Tax is £65k! I Thought mine was expensive at £215

Joe.

If you've owned the car for more than 3 years can't you import it free of tax. I work with alot of Norwegian guys and one of them bought a mk5 golf GTI in germany and put it straight into storage saying that it was worth it for what he would save on the tax bill???
Despite the high costs most of the guys I know over there drive much nicer cars than we brits do! :(

Thanks for all the welcomes, you all seem like a nice bunch of people.

Thanks for the tip. However, I am guessing that this was a while ago? Because this rule is no longer in effect, probably because it was being misused. The rule was intended for people moving to Norway, so that they could bring a car that they owned. Now however, everyone (without exceptions) has to pay the tax.

Anyway, exactly two weeks left today before I pick it up. The count-down has started. I hope that volcano does not comlpicate things for me!!

I think this must have been about 5 years ago. I'm sure it was a Mk5 rather than a Mk4 and they came out in 2005. Pretty sad that the tax is so harsh that its worth wile laying up a brand new car for three years when you just want to be :driving: from day one!!
I still remember the 1st time I worked in Norway and got charged £26 for a cheese burger, fries and coke in a bar. A few of my friends are stuck in hotels there at the moment because of the volcano after crew changing. They are worried they will have spent a months wages before they get home!
