Just got my new z4 and love it. Few questions:

The steering seems a bit twitchy at motorway speeds

When I turn the car off I can hear a mechanical rattle or something

Are these normal, Thanks

Runflats and tramlining perhaps? search the forums, lots of good posts on this.

Hey, join the club - I just picked up my new Z yesterday!

Had a 200 mile motorway journey straight after and I'd say the steering was on the heavy side as opposed to twitchy. Did get the occasional tramline when in the inside-lane though which gives a bit of a fright.

And there are loads of hums, buzzes and clonks from under the bonnet when I turn the car off. Various pumps, cooling systems going off / on I assume.

Twitchy as opposed to what? You'll get used to it-the steering is VERY responsive and the wide, low-profile tires tend to follow any groove in the road (exacerbated by runflat tire's very stiff sidewalls-you can lessen the effect with non-runflats as some on here have done. I just got used to it and know which roads tend to give me problems).

Is the rattle just at turning off the ignition? Some have reported a loose heat shield.

Ah, sounds more like what my service adviser called "gear rattle". Says his E46 M does it too. Especially if it's parked on an incline, in neutral, clutch engaged. He said there are two counter-rotating shafts in close proximity. Depressing the clutch moves the shafts away from each other, so no rattle!

Yep, my 2004 60k miles 3.0i rattles when you turn it off a bit... just the release bearing for the clutch rattling as it slows right down/stops, and the gearbox input shaft doing the same 'un-smoothly'
Clutching it loads up the release bearing and removes direct input to the gearbox input shaft.

Not sure about the twitchyness, are you driving in the lorry dips in lane 1 much? They can pull normal cars around a fair bit, the Z4 on RFT's even more...
