my new z4 2.5si experience

I've been driving my new 2.5si for a week now and been loving it.

I was stopped at the lights yesterday beside a new honda civic type r. The jerk kept revving his engine, trying to engage me in a race.

I wasn't sure how to respond because firstly, I'm not actually sure I would be the faster one, and didn't want to embarass myself.

Has anyone had any experience of the same sort?

And now, would you just let it go because you know you have the better car? :P

Yeah I had that on my second drive out in the car. Some goon in a Seat Cupra decided he'd like to see if I would engage on a country road near me. Left him to it. Frustrated the hell out him.

I think majority of time I actually drive slower in the Z. Havent really had open road to really get it going yet. Around town there never seams much point!

Think you will have to get used to it, probably best to let them get on with it, as eyup says really anoys them.

Fair to say get more people trying it on than with any other car I have owned before, but luckily where I live it's still quite rare.

I too have had this - some muppet in a 15 year old merc challenged me to a race at a pedestrian crossing. Politefully declined :D

Thing that really confused me was how he thought I was gonna race him with other cars in front of me :?

Only had it once so far. Driving home on a dual carrigeway late in the evening, making good time on the almost empty road... came to pass a Focus ST2 and he started to match my speed. I sped up by 5-10mph and he continued to match me. I didn't bother trying to put my foot down, eventualy I left him to it. Judging by the Focus's specs, it would have been close but I should of had the edge.

No point racing on the roads though, I'm not risking my pride and joy and my freedom.

Plus there's no fun going as fast as you can on straight roads, twisties are where to have fun :driving:

Don’t do it in any case. You do not know what he has under the hood. If you win, so what does someone give you a big prize? Go to the track if you need your ego stroked. :)

I think with a type r it'd be a drivers race. Neither car was really intended for stop light to stop light action though.. I probably would have laughed.

I have had this problem with the Z more than any other car I have owned. The Z seems to attract the usual idoits with their go faster stripes and arches wearing baseball caps sitting on my rear number plate trying to goad me into racing them. I must say I tend to let them go, this really frustrates them.
Why do I need to prove to these people how fast my car goes. I look at it that If I ignore them i will hopefully keep my car intact and my licence alot longer.

Strangely, judging by how frequently it happens to you guys, since I changed from my former Smart Roadster Light to the Z4 all the people who used to want a race at the lights have disappeared. Well, bar the occasional deluded repmobile or insane boy racer.

I never race anyone for racing's sake, but I do respond to people attemtping to shaft me (and everyone else) off the lights by passing on the left or cutting into the queue. I smoke 'em!

As said its not worth risking your liscense or an accident especially round town but have had a few people up my arse when going through a village on an A road where the speed drops to 30 mph and i love waiting for that national speed limit sign when i can shoot away :D

No traffic light GP's for me as your either going to leave 'em behind, then so what, be made to look stupid by some wolf in sheep's clothing, or get a ticket/accident, but similar to Andrew D I take no crap from others trying to force past, etc.

yeah I get challenged by ricers that cost like one of my rims all the time. But there are also good parts like the high speed chase with an RX8, etc... :P

I should be ashamed to say that I had one of my best drives following a '80s Chevy Corsica (I know, I know ) at surprisingly solid pace through the many curves that make up the Lolo Gap from Montana to Idaho. It seemed foolish to pass a local type on their turf so I just kept my spacing and followed their lead. I suspect that if I would have passed, the other driver would have taken it personally and tried to stick on my bumper. It turned out that relaxing was the best choice especially since I didn't get a ticket on the way.

People stop at traffic lights?!?! Hell here they don't stop till a good solid 4 seconds AFTER it's red. It's pretty much suicide if you try to race from a red light.

The best way is to keep eye contact rev your motor then drop your clutch moving 4 meters or so then stop, sit back and watch the chaos as they jump the red light into the on coming traffic.
