My new toy!

Hi all, just picked up a silver 2003 2.5 Z4, and I love it. Was toying between the 2.5 Z4 and the 225 TT - Definitely made the right choice!

Now I'm after making a couple of subtle mods to begin with, (I can already feel 'Z4-itis' pulling me in all directions)...I'm thinking about engine noise and slight BHP increase so am led toward 2 things: Sound generator and Induction.

Are there any suggestions on what the best induction kit would be for this model? I'm currently looking at a 'Ram Air Cold Air Intake' system - any suggestions?
Also, would a sound generator from the 3.0 fit into my 2.5 without any hassle?

Appreciate your advice!

Still figuring out how to use a forum, so my profile pic and signature will follow soon...

Hi DD84.

Welcome to the forum. p.s. you're going to have to upload some pics or we'll have to have words!

If you are looking to do some great first mods then I would recommend these:

- Stubby ariel
- K&N Pannel filter

The reason I dont recommend getting a CIA induction kit is because they don't see significant HP gains for the money at all. You'll be lucky to get 3-4bhp if that and the money could be spent on a complete re-map that could give you 10-12bhp. The reason people buy the induction kits for their cars if for the sound that it creates above 3,000rpm...

By simply installing an £11 K&N pannel filter you'll get around 1-3bhp increases for 5% of the price of a CAI cone filter and still get a teeny weeny sound improvement in that 3k-redline area.

I have had both 225 TT and currently the Z4 the latter is a better drivers car you have made the right choice i found the TT boring it is a golf after all.

As for mods i don't think you can get much BHP out of any BMW engine without spending lots of cash? The sound generator as far as i know is a straight swap and worth doing as are bypass pipes on the exhaust. They are both fairly cheap mods.

As you probably know getting shot of the run flats is top of a lot of peoples wish lists. I have just done it and i would highly recommend that its done when the tyres need replacing.

Would leave the OEM induction as it is - BMW have got it just about right.

Sound generator is an easy mod but a bit fiddly but worth the effort I.m.o. Just for the induction roar in the cabin  ......and welcome to the Forum

Cheers all.

Machine Monkey I've heard plenty of people slating the run flats. Is the key motivation for replacing them simply the ride quality?

Welcome! Get some pics up! :poke:

Re run flats, I think people moan about the handling as well with run flats.

For me it was ride quality. I have 19" wheels and used to crash over any bumps. Pot holes made my fillings fall out!! It has also helped with the tram lining. The car feels better at speed. There also seems more feel through the steering as well.

It's a valid question!

You can buy tyre sealant and keep a can in the car. The Z4 Ms never had run flats and in the boot under a cover is a 'mobility kit' containing a compressor and some sealant. I think you can buy the kit on ebay or from a dealer

You could be in a world of trouble!! Also non RFTs are not as safe if you have a blow out. If you don't mind them and are happy I wouldn't bother. I hated mine.

There are a few options carry a pump/compressor and tyre weld. Or a space saver spare in the boot.

Interesting perspectives...thanks.

It's currently sitting on 225/40/18 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx Run Flats that have covered less than 4k, so I'll keep them on for now.

Anyone got a sound generator from the 3.0 for sale?!
