My New Chrome Exhaust Tips

It's a 2005 (September '05 build). To my knowledege the exhaust is OEM - bought it from a BMW dealer as a Certified used car w very low miles. I really don't think any after market work has been done. Exhausts kind of look like stainless steel.

That is a very nice Z... I wish we had more interesting colours/spec cars like that in the UK.

All the ones I like the most are US cars :)

White with dream red, olivine with tan roof, etc...

The above tailpipe picture looks exactly like my 2004 3.0i tailpipes. Same squared oval shape. I am also cosidering chrome tips but didnt know it would be hard to find. Ill let you know what I find.

Z4wam - where are you from? Different shapes may be by market/year.

Interesting as clearly this is a standard exhaust pattern but very different to the type I had on my 2003 3.0i which ran perfectly cylindrical tailpipes with round trims.
This is a poor shot of mine while doing some othre work that shows them to be perfectly round:

yeah, there's 1 screw on each. The inside of the tip also ridged sections to provide a tight fit. I have a pic at home I think which I'll post later if you want?

If I'm right, there are only 2 screws (1 on each pipe) secured the chrome pipes to the box.

Ok what's the secret?!? I'm not a dummy and have psoted pics in many other forums. I cant post a picture. I see an "Img" button in the post text options, but clicking just adds img in brackets.

:) What I do is upload my pics to photobucket.com it then gives you the img tag which you can paste direct into our text.

The 'IMG' button will allow you to drop the url where you hosted the picture direct in between the 2 sets of brackets and then it displays in the post.

As posted above Photobucket is one popular place to host.

Thanks for the tip. So heres what I have. My car is a 3.0i and I am able to fit part number 82120151088 and I have the same pipes as "sbtwister" according to the pics posted earlier in this thread. They are a tight fit, like a glove, even had to squeeze them to flatten and work them on. I screwed them down but I don't think they'd come off without allot of help if I didn't. 0419091342.jpg

Thanks, Z4WAM! Glad to see you got those pictures posted. I guess you convinced me, I'll re-order a set of the tips, and gently pursuade them into shape (rubber mallet?), then give them another go. The improvement in looks is worth a little effort.

I just got the new set in. First a little reshaping was necessary to square them out a little. Then I cooled down the tailpipes (ice pack) and warmed up the new tips (hair dryer). The tips would then just slip on, and with a few gentle "love taps" with a rubber mallet, I was able to slide them on all the way and tighten the screws. They look great, and I don't think there is any chance of them coming off.

Thanks for the input

These exhaust trims need to be a tight fit, just to make sure they remain on the exhaust tips. Maybe use some lubricant to help get the tips on. One screw will hold them in place.
