My most disappointing car

Yes I sold my F30 335d for my current Z4MC. I drove 26k miles in 15 months and found it brilliant for economy and motorway commuting, but like you it was very boring to drive and just no real excitement even though 0-62 was achieved in 4.8 secs. The best thing about it was the Head Up Display and I would of kept it if I was still doing big miles even though I lacked any connection with it as it was so effective on long trips.

Mine was a 2000 honda civic coupe. Id just had to scrap an old 90s 300zx twin turbo after the engine went bang, and i thought 'thats it, no more complicated turbos, slipping clutches and 22mpg. Im gonna downsize to a simple, high revving 1.6 na'

Which was great for a brief while, a proper schizophrenic engine that really woke up after 5k.

Problem is, it really had no torque, and every overtake necessitated dropping several gears, and giving it full beans, which was a bit tiring. Even cruising a motorway it was doing like, 3500rpm, could have really done with a 6th gear. Plus, its a fwd honda civic, i thought it was cool but really, it wasnt.

Fortunately someone drove into it after 7months, which got me back into a big engined nissan, a 350z, with a 3.5 litre v6. So much better... great to drive, sounded awesome and looked great. Had that for 4 years, loved it throughout.

Well having inspired scootr it would be rude not to post my experience!

It was a 1994 Mercedes C280 Sport Auto that I bought in 2000 on about 100K miles. It had full leather, climate control and an electric sunroof which were rare features back then, so I had high expectations as it was the dearest car I had bought by some way. But I don't think the "Sport" part helped as the handling was nothing special, but the ride was shocking for a Mercedes saloon car. It also had an old-fashioned 4-speed Auto (manuals were extremely rare) and I've never had or wanted an Auto since! It had a steering box and the steering wasn't very precise, then it developed an intermittent fault with the fly-by-wire accelerator so sometimes all it would do was idle! Eventually worked out the problem and got a replacement ECU fitted.

By then it just left me underwhelmed. I got a chance to buy a 2000 Seat Leon Cupra for a good price from my employer and that was the end of the Merc - although it took ages to sell!

It wasn't a patch on the 1989 2 litre manual 190e that it replaced in terms of ride, build quality or even handling. Although it was slightly quicker despite the dim-witted gearbox.

I should have looked for a 2.6 litre 190e.

Worst ever car was a morris marina 1.8 tc over 50 mph you needed 2 lanes it wandered all over the place

Worst car ever - Land Rover Dicsovery, never knew that standard servicing incuded removing all oil seals as they start leaking after 6 months.

Had it for two years, nothing was covered by warranty (leaking seals are normal ...) and £3k of standard servicing costs. Never broke down though.

In some ways its disingenuous because in many ways it wasn't a bad little car..

I took over from my mother her 1993 Kia Pride in around 1999..I'd left my then employer in a board room coup, and with it my beloved Audi A4 Quattro (fully loaded)..never having had to own a car, my mother, who had stopped driving loaned me her Kia.

Based on an old Mazda 121 design, it was a spung loaded jelly when it came to handling and was as tinny as tinny can be..a mighty come down from someone weened on high performance motorbikes and expensive German cars..

But it was reliable and got from A to B..

My two best memories of it were:

a) Overtaking a Porsche 911 in traffic (inadvertantly) upon which he went beserk and went on the wrong side of a set of bollards to re-establish his genitalia credentials..

b) After a service, the wheel hub nut wasn't correctly fitted, subsequently going down Newmarket High St only to see the rear right hand wheel overtaking me..my wife wetted herself when she came out with some tools to assist..it did drive remarkably well on 3 wheels..

I think the worst car I ever travelled in was an Austin Maxi, 200 miles into the journey the driveshaft departed from the car. A close second being with my dad in a 1970 Cortina and the gear stick snapped  It was about the thickness of a straw and remember my dad taking it to the dealer and changing gear with a pair of pliers.

Cars were so much more exciting back then.

My first Dodge Diesel pickup (1991) did this same thing. I snapped the gear shifter off in reverse. :o The 190 hp Cummings diesel was massively under powered and the captains chairs wobbled on the floor after 30,000 miles a body bushing fell off the truck while rolling down the road  I traded it straight in on a FORD diesel with a big 7.4 international diesel. These trucks were used to pull horse trailers. The turbo crapped the bed at 30k - but they replaced it.

Don't worry, it is not like that Escort is worth anything now

Alfa 147 2.0 - I’d owned the 1.6 previously and really enjoyed it as it was really well put together (no really!) and had just enough power to be fun on occasion.

After having a company car I then bought the 2.0. What a bag-o-shite. No more discernible power than the 1.6 and the gearbox seemed less suited. I guess you should just never go back....
